Question 915 bearing orientation

I am in the middle of a 915 gearbox rebuild, have main shaft & pinion rear bearings that i will replace. The bearings are FAG with the brass color cage, this type just seems a bit beefier than the steel ones. I want to use the brass cage versions.
A few questions:
1) the bearings have one side that is slightly smaller diameter cage, i believe this should be facing out (as per attached pictures). I am planning to replace the steel cage type, so i have no reference. Maybe it does not matter?
2) are the bearings with the brass cage older NOS types / any better or worse than the steel cage types?
3) the gearbox is from 1985, was in very good shape overall, trying to determine if it had been previously rebuilt, maybe the bearing type can shed some light?
Thanks in advance, John

I'm gonna say ask Pete Z, John Walker, or Steve W. I'm only familiar with the original brass cage version.

Matt,
I will use the brass cage versions. Just need to know which way they are oriented. If I follow the current steel cage versions, the side that the part number is on matches the same way the race was installed. Seems logical to follow the same but I am not 100% sure my thoughts are correct. I'll reach out to the contacts you mentioned. Thanks.

Sorry, I didn't read, I just looked. I saw the brass bearing and thought 901. For 915 what I am familiar with is the steel bearing that you currently have on your pinion, so I still don't have an answer for you. Every used 915 pinion I've got here has that steel bearing on it.

Where did you source the brass bearing? My guess would be that it is older, not newer.

Found one. Note the mechanical speedo drive. I'm pretty sure that's an early bearing that was replaced by the steel version.

I bought some new dog teeth off a retired Porsche mechanic, he had a bunch of random gearbox parts, had a NOS pinion rear and a main shaft front, sold them to me for $50 each. My shafts on the 915 had (2) brass type and (2) steel type with races, so I decided to jump on the bearings and do brass throughout.
