Chilly Performance, Tampa

Hello Pelicans,

Can anyone give some reviews on Chilly Performance in Tampa as I need a place that does top notch work and knows air cooled cars, especially from a performance point of view ?

Thanks in advance for your help !

I'm sure someone on PP can help but if not Another recourse for shop reviews is your local PCA contact for that region. If your up to it there is an excellent shop in Orlando .

Chilly's is good... Family owned and run, honest and reasonable. The head mechanic worked for Dave White racing forever and is now in business with his son and daughter-in-law. They have a nice shop and do good work. They recently did a bunch of work on my dad's '89 Carrera including a clutch and suspension work and he is very happy with the finished product. I'd go there if my car weren't in pieces presently...

VSR Motorsports over on Hillsborough. They deal with street to track cars.

Hey Guys,

Searched Tampa to see if there was anyone about. I'm a recent So. Cal transplant. Just bought an '84 widebody coupe. Won't take delivery until next week. She needs lots of work. Hoping to meet some of you guys.

Cars and Coffee out here? Also need some advice on a decent mechanic to? So few old P cars on the road out here... Oh, I'm in Lutz and work in Apollo Beach...long drive. Scott

To the original poster, I have heard only good things about Chilly's from both a customer service and performance standpoint. I assisted a Pelican member here in Tampa with an engine drop who used Chilly's for quite a bit of work on his SC and he was very happy with the work.

For 4flyboy, welcome to the area and there are two great Cars and Coffee events monthly, 1st Saturday of the month at Reeves Motorsports in Tampa and the 3rd Saturday morning of the month at the DuPont Registry in Pinellas County. For a list of all of the area car events you can check Motoring Tampa Bay and the local PCA events can be found at Suncoast Porsche Club of America

We are lucky to have a lot of quailty Porsche shops in the Tampa Bay area. I can personally recommend Leo Leal and German Specialties and here is the contact info on the shops that I am familar with.

I used Chilly for a transmission rebuild. They were never able to resolve the gear grinding issue, and refused to refund any $. I had to pay a second shop to rebuild the transmission a second time. I was very unhappy with the experience overall and would not recommend Chilly Performance. And as for my credibility, I am new to this board but am a long time member of Rennlist, a PCA member and a certified PCA track instructor. I just happened across this thread and felt the need to register in order to relate my experience.

Whoa....

Mark, I must admit, I looked at your post count and started to dismiss your comments....until I read your resume.

I'm just about to fork over some hard earned pesos to reinstall stock heat exchangers and blowers and the like at Chilly's.

I've been very deliberate and visited the shop on two occasions.....met father and son (family affair) a month apart. They both gave me extended shop tours and 45 minutes of their time. I was feeling all warm and fuzzy?

I am impressed with their race cars and experience....prices didn't seem too insane (relatively) but I'm used to So Cal. Ugh.

I must admit, I've been lazy and not done due diligence. I haven't looked at others on the list.

Anybody else want to weigh in here?

Appreciate the heads up Mark.

Thanks,

Scott

I was wondering about that place. My wife worked a couple of buildings down from them on Anderson. They had a SC or Carrera parked out front for sale that I wanted to stop by and check out but never did.

First, welcome to Tampa. Reeves and DuPont are regular events (reeves first sat, DuPont third Sat) get there early spots fill quickly.
On shops, Leo at German Specialties is great, he has done lots of work on my '75 targa. I did not have a good experience at European Performance (too much $ for too little work), but others love them... pm me if you want more details. Nuff said. Suncoast PCA hold regular events so you should have plenty of events to fill your weekend calendar.
Again, welcome hope to see you at one of the event (I drive a 1975 Black Targa)
Cheers,

I would consider the Reeves dealership for service in the Tampa area. They support our local PCA track events at Sebring, and have experience with running their own track modified Cayman at Sebring. I have known one of their managers, Tom Heinz, for several years and he is a stand up guy.

Bunch of Activities in the current profile

http://suncoastpca.org/wp-content/uploads/profiles/2014/2014_04.pdf

I'll also add Carlos to the mix - certified porsche mechanic - he's worked for Bert Smith - and European Performance. He's rebuilt engines for major power - one of the few guys out there that knows the air cooled as well as the newer stuff.
