Just got a 78 SC Targa - so happy...

...anyone wanna come over an bust my bubble? Any shadenfreudistic porsche experts in the north jersey area wanna come and take a look? This is my first post here so hello to the group of nuts: I've read way more about you and your cars than is healthy. My name is Chris and I live in Bed Stuy Brooklyn, but have stashed the car at my parents place in Ridgewood, NJ, where I am now and have just pulled it out for a spin and a wash. Anyone in Ridgewood wanna pop over and give me a porsche lesson? If you do, my number is nineoneseveneightzerosixsixsevenzerothree. I know that was weird, but something about putting my phone number in an easily recognizable format on the web seemed like a bad idea. Anyway, I guess I'm asking someone to come over and do a post-PPI for free because of community and all that. Gosh, sounds like a reach now that I've typed it. OK, I'm gonna wash the old boy/girl (not sure the gender of SCs - the big hips and 3 liter growl kinda says alpha lesbian, which I kind of dig). Will take some pictures whence shiny. Call me if you care to pop over - is that crazy? I'll find out I guess.

best to you pelicanites - I am truly thrilled to join the tribe.

chris

Congratulations to your '78 Targa. I know how you feel. I remember the feeling when I got my first Porsche a '62 356 after stepping up from a '56 VW. Smiles all the way! And I never left the brand for more than a year, and stayed mostly topless.

Of course, a picture! I was going to wait until I grafted a whale tail to the front (cuz nobody's did it yet and she's a little light up front, word), but OK, here's the car as it sits. This is a Euro model purchased in Stuutgart and shipped to the US in the early 80s. Lots o' options on this guy and they all seem to work: Leather sport seats (super bolstered!), headlight washers, power windows and mirrors and a Lous Vuitton embossed brown vinyl targa top - Boss!! OK, it's just a tattered black vinyl deal, but just you wait!

Vanilla Ice is in the house. J/K welcome to the Targa club, get out and drive. I was up in NYC last year with mine; top down the whole way from Florida.

Nice car, it looks great.

I prefer the no tail look.

Congrats. Just got a 79 Targa myself. As far as gender, SC's must be women. As you pointed out they have big hips. They are also kinda of feisty.

Another 78 Targa - Welcome!

I picked up a 78 SC Targa almost two years ago. I have really done very little to the car so far. If you have done any research, you know to check for the pop-off valve and updated chain tensioners. Other threads here have descriptions of other issues to check.

Mine had no heat. The PO put on new B&B headers and muffler, but did not reconnect the tubing from the heat exchangers to the flapper valves. Didn't really matter since only one flapper valve moved, the blower motor was dead, and the heat controls in the dash were inoperable. It was a cold drive in early May from Fairbanks to Anchorage.

Recently spent several evenings replacing cables in the dash to get the heat controls back. I have decided to back date the heat and just get rid of the blower motor. Recently ordered new vinyl for the targa top. I also ordered the muslin fabric. Will soon work on the doors. The windows and locks work marginally.

The synchronizer for 1st is gone in mine and I can only down shift when I am almost at a standstill. Mechanic checked is out and told me its normal and deal with it. He suggested putting off the rebuild until something else fails in the transmission.

Mostly, I have had fun driving mine. I drive it to work nearly every day from May through October (depending on snow). If it's nice out, the top is off.
