Engine fan moter blowing continously
just got back from a drive in 96 degree temps, and the blower morter fan is running with the engine off. Is this normal like some of the electric fan cars or is there something else going on? The temperature guage was in the normal range.
Also, the speedomoter also quit working during the same drive, should not be connected to the fan issue, but thought I would ask, you never know. thanks Bob |
Which blower fan? The one on your front oil cooler? If it is thermostatically controlled to come on at a certain temperature it will keep running until it drops below that temp.

its the fan in the engine compartment, the same one that is used for the heater blower.

More likely the contacts in the switch have bent so they stay on, or at some point in the harness where the two fan wires are side by side they have melted together, thereby shorting the switch.

well, just pulled the fan plug at the rear and it shut down. Is this fan used for engine cooling or just for the heater/ac?

I believe that I have read somewhere that the fan that you are talking about will come on and run when the engine is really hot.
Also, in the last couple of months mine has gotten to where it is on all of the time, but I am pretty sure that is due to a problem with the switch at the heater levers, or possibly the relay for those motors. I haven't looked into it too closely yet due to lack of time. |
I certainly hope it is not a relay problem as that sucker is $$$$, already replaced it once after I purchased the pcar, the relay was missing. I'll check it again after it cools off and see if it comes back on.

Sorry I can't help...but I would be interested know what you find out as I have the same motor running continuously when the engine is on in my 84' coupe...

The fan is switched by a contact on the heater levers. If either or both levers are up, the fan will come on (on my manual heater control). I believe it is a single line and is actuated by grounding. The relay in the engine compartment also controls the footwell blowers. With the heater boxes closed, the only thing the fan will cool is the exhaust manifold. Although I don't know if it would come on in hot weather, I've never seen mine come on without pulling up the lever(s) even in over 100f in central BC on the way to the Round-up.

now that the engine has cooled down, I pluged the fan back in and it did not come on. So it leave me to believe that the fan is on a temp switch and is also used to cool the motor as well as for the heater/ac. Can anyone confirm this?

It seems suspicious that the relay was
missing when you bought the car and now you're having this problem. Can you call the PO and feel him out as to whether he had a problem with it? |
I did call the PO and without saying, the relay went bad and after he found out the cost, $125, he elected not to replace. With the car in florida, was no real reason to use the heater fan motor. I'll go for another drive tomorrow and see how it works, need to get this fixed befor the historic races in Atlanta this weekend.
