Why is my 3rd gear so lame?
I have a REALLY strong 1st and 2nd gear, but when I hit 3rd, it's almost like hitting 5th! Yet, when I hit 4th, it takes off again! Is this something I can adjust? My 2nd grinds a lot, so I'm gonna pull the trani pretty soon anyway to replace the synchros. Any ideas on my 3rd gear? Can I simply buy different gears for this car? It's a '74 911, CIS, 2.7, 915 Trani.
I went to our local drags last night and ran it one time, just because I was curious what I would pull in the 1/4 mile. My brother was there with a 1998 Mustang Cobra, and I took him all the way through 2nd gear, but when I hit 3rd, he slowly pulled away and ate my lunch. I'm not saying I want a drag car, nor do I intend to tear this car up on the strip, but it would be nice to be able to pull on Mustangs and rice burners, and I KNOW if my 3rd gear was as strong as 2nd it would be easy to do. BTW, my best 1/4 time was 15.2, which was way higher than a mostly stock Integra which pulled a 14.5. Ashamed, KC

For the record, when I do lose in a light to light, it's 3rd that does it for me everytime. I don't know what's up with that.
It's not just the slower transition. 3rd isn't close enough to second for the car to wind out. I'd like to change the gearing. I don't need all that top end.
