71 left lateral fuel tank support fitment dilemma/?

After a long hiatus I've started restoring my little targa again. The left corner was damaged and most of the corner was removed because what wasn't bent, was rusted. I thought the best way to rebuild the corner was to get the associated replacement parts and mock fit to find the proper location of the lower outer section of the clip. Well it was all going to plan until I looked at the lateral support and realized there are additional curves where the original (and the rusted cutout I acquired for visual help) do not.

Basically there is an additional "push out" on the lateral support area where the battery box is located. The additional sheet metal is attached to the lateral support with spot welds and has a hole in it( see first photo). Am I missing something I need here or is this some option that I don't have on my 71 911E targa? Would you build the outer clip to fit the mystery section, or remove the mystery section? Thanks in advance.

This side does't have it....

You just need to remove the spot welds on that "bump" and fabricate a replacement piece so it fits flush.

Do you happen to know what the original purpose was for that bump?

Ed,

I am dealing with a similar issue on the left side of my 71T. Battery acid ate some metal and I have to replace the forward section of the lateral. I just looked at mine and it did not have a bulge anywhere. It is straight under the battery box, no mystery section.

Where did you get the front portion of the laterals? Wrong year?

I can take pictures of mine if you want me to. As what to do. I fabricated a piece, it is OK, but a new section would be better. From what I can see, it would be a snap to do a little cutting and bending to remove the bulge to make straight.

My welding skills need a lot of help.

Good luck

Bob

the "bump" is for 65-68. that repair part is an answer to make one part that fits many years. remove the spotwelds on the repair panel bump, fit in a straight piece, voila, fits 69-73. where did you get the part?

It was a Stoddard part. I'm not sure how I came to the conclusion to purchase that one. Going back and attempting to buy the part again I seem to end up purchasing that one again. I don't see anything that is just a 69-73 piece. Looking online at pre-69's you can see where the bump is located on the left clip. Sure left me stumped for a bit...

I'll cut out the piece and go from there, thanks for the input.

They're all the same. Porsche only makes one part. Just drill the spot welds and fill it in.
