Will the Mocal cooler I bought fit a 71 with battery boxes?

I have a 71 with a 3.0 that is going back together.
I had purchased the aftermarket kit below to use but am having real issues seeing where to place the radiator.
When I built the car I did not remove the battery boxes - am I right in assuming that that these two items assume the same space?
Thanks
Sam

Scratch that.

Fits OK. Stands off the battery box by about 40mm - although not ideal for airflow should be a great improvement.

have you considered any ducting of air from the front to the cooler? if so take a look at the plenum I used for my gearbox cooler >>>>>>>>

you could look for one to fit just the top of the cooler above the battery box.
??? seal it off real good around the plenum, down the sides of the cooler against the battery box and I bet air would be forced over the entire cooler while moving. I use the hotwater line insulation foam deals to seal off around my front cooler. not very elegant, but it does stand up to the heat, fastens very nice with zip tyes, and is cheap. id also fab up some sort of screen cover to keep stuff from being flung into it. fun project!

Thanks - great idea I will look into. I had not thought of the plenum but am already looking for a hardy louvered sheet to act as a rock guard...

4 weeks ago I thought I couldn't rebuild a motor, 8 hours ago I was unsure about mounting this cooler - it's amazing what just diving in (with good books and online support) can achieve!

Lets just hope nothing goes boom when I get it all back together..

Sam,

Great project, would love to see some more details, history. I'm working on something similar. Can you give some details on the oil cooler kit you bought?

Tom

Timely post. I was just working on this today. Cooler is fully shrouded from bottom and back, gasket around the edges. Not terribly pretty, but you can't see it anyway. I can dig up the louver source if you're interested.

Picture from below isn't great. It is sandwiched between the spoiler and the valance.

The car is a 71 with a 915 and 79 3.0SC. There is more history here.

Another early hotrod - Meet Jezebel....

I pulled the valve covers a few weeks ago and three head studs fell out. After a local quote ($!!!!!) I decided to dive in and rebuild myself. I also decided to add the oil cooler it will need.

I found the cooler kit below elsewhere (sorry hosts - I get all I can from you). Like most things from Vendor X it eventually turned up several weeks later. The braided hose comes as a long roll which you need to cut and add connectors yourself to and no cable clamps / brackets of any type are included.

FOR PORSCHE: BAT004, BAT 004 - READY TO SHIP - (OIL COOLER KIT, 44 ROW, 911 PRE-'77)

I flipped the mounting brackets 180 from their original position on the cooler (mounting holes outboard of cooler) to holes inboard of cooler. To do this you can only use one bolt per corner rather than two to hold the cooler so it stands out from the brackets and allows access to the mounting bolts. This does however make the overall height around 50mm less that is needed to squeeze it in.

As shown in the pic I then used some Home Depot 25 and 35mm aluminum box tube to make a simple frame to joining the cooler brackets to the car while spacing the cooler back from the battery box 60mm. this is needed or the top interferes with the headlight bucket. I then just drilled through this bracket and put 4 fender washers and nuts inside the battery box.

I am sure none of this makes any sense without step by step pics. Email with questions.

The thermostat was easy to mount on the bolt plate in teh rear wheel well, then just run the hose to get length, cut and add ends. I ordered mounting hardware from Elephant Racing.

Hmmmm, try it later. I was just on earlier to make sure that was where I bought it. Perhaps technical hiccup with the site. Too find it again, I searched for "928 louver".
