Glue floor mats to floor pan???

Hi,

now that I have installed all the little pieces of my new carpet set that cover the outside perimeter of the floor pan and the rear seat area, the pieces that are left are the carpet for the center tunnel and the floor mats front and rear.

My question is, are the center tunnel piece and the floor mats glued to the sheet metal or do I just toss them in? Further more, I'm wondering if I should buy an additional floor mat set to keep the OEM carpet nice and shiny?

Thanks, Manfred

In my car the center piece is glued. More towards the back. In the front it seems that most of it is held by the console and shifter.

The floor mats front and back are tucked in. No glue.

i will be doing my carpet as soon as i get the car out of storage and my thought was to glue velcro to the floor and the back of the carpet in the floor mat area. hopefully will stay in place and still allow removal for cleaning etc.

The original floor carpet I have is removable. On the passenger side there is a strap on the carpet that locks it into place. There is a metal loop on the car the carpet fits over and the strap is tucked into the loop. I cannot remember if there is the same on the driver's side.

Yes - get an additional set for on top of the primary ones.

Front floor mats.........

I would leave them loose so that they may be removed for cleaning. They will stay in place pretty well without glue. The idea of using velcro is also a good thought.

Velcro

I used some velcro on my rear mats to stop them sliding around, just bonded it to the floor pan with some contact adhesive.

Mine are not glued, and makes cleaning a breeze. I can also check for rust and ant other items needing attention(speaker wires, etc).

Not sure what year your car is but my 69 has horsehair sound deadening which makes gluing to the pan NOT an option.

Guys,

thanks for all the answers and suggestions. I will not glue the carpet mats for now and observe, how they behave. The Velcro seems to be a good idea if they move around too much. And I will buy an additional set of aftermarket floor mats to protect the carpet.

All,

Depending on how many layers of floor mat you have, you may find that the top layer moves around on the drivers side.

My '80 SC has a metal bracket under the seat attached to the floor, and I put a zip tie around this bracket, and then another one facing forward through the tie on the bracket.

Before I did up the second wire tie, I attached a binder clip [the thing use use to clamp a bunch of papers] , and then clamped it onto the floor mat.

The mat can't slide forward any more and end up under the pedals.

I don't think there is any need to glue down the center console either. You will have to lift it up if you need to work on the front shifter bushings. My center console carpet (original) seemed like it was sticky around the edges, but not really glued down.
