Hi,
No problems, it is great that I could help. As for the image, I found it on this forum originally posted by Hunt3r. I have a 'dodgy' pdf copy of the Bentley manual(I think), mostly complete that I use as my reference. Cheers Ray |

The DME relay is the fuel pump relay on the 3.2 Carreras. If you also ordered the Red fuel pump relay, it was only used on pre '84 cars. The jumper for the test is just a simple wire, no resistor is needed. |
Ahhhh yes, I did also order the red relay. Then again, the English gent that sold
it to me said it was for the fuel pump. Oh well, I suppose I have an extra relay now. I did try the DME relay today and still had the issue. So, I suppose the next step is to do the jumper test to see if that will cure this problem. joy joy joy... :) Thank you Ed for your reply S |
Check the flywheel geartooth speed and rotation position sensors.
|
I would check all the grounds, and make sure they are tight. To the left and behind the fuel filter, on the left side of the intake manifold and a ground strap that bolts to the body, under the car and on the passenger side.

WELL,
It seems my last resort could be the most expensive in the quest to fix this issue. Just to bring everyone up to date and perhaps save time for any new readers. I have tried a new DME Bypass the white plug/jumper Fuel pump is good/runs strong I can hear it run when this problem happens Checked all grounds and power at all connections So, the speed and rotation position sensor is my last choice and I suppose should have been the 1st thing to change. Because the RPM gauge jumps all over when the car is revved. But, I have had this same issue due to bad ground and low power. With the above, who seems to have the best price on this part? Lastly, does this seem to be a strange issue because the car did not have this problem before the engine was removed? Just seems to have manifested after it was reinstalled.... Thanks everyone, hope you all have a blessed Easter. Scott |
Looks like I'll be doing this test 1st before ordering....
How To Test RPM & TDC Sensors in 944 and 911 3.2 Carrera Porsches - YouTube |
Scott,
Our host sells these sensors for BMW, made by Bosch, that are a good deal less expensive than the Porsche-specific ones. Here's one of many threads on the subject. I purchased two of these when I did my top end, they work perfectly. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/499311-carrera-bmw-timing-mark-sender-interchangeable-part-number.html I hope this does it for you! I had a feeling they would be on offer for some other brand vehicle, just wasn't sure which one it would be. Just to make sure I didn't fall all the way off my rocker when I was installing the engine. The end plugs for both of these sensors, they aren't the same are they? Making sure I didn't plug them into the wrong socket (so to speak) if they would even work in reverse? Looking at the video above they have close to the same value, this is what brought me the question last night when I couldn't sleep. |
Reference sensors are identical. You can reverse them easily. The car will not start at all if they are reversed. Since the car starts they are not reversed. I am betting on the fuel pump.
|
Gary,
Would you still bet on the fuel pump if the RPM gauge were jumping around erratic? When I got the DME relay a few days ago, I installed and was able to drive that day with zero issues aside from the RPM gauge not reading proper. Then a few days passed, went to use the car to get carryout and the old issue pops up. |
