Another Ungo Removal Thread
I am finally getting around to removing my Ungo Box from my 1986 Carrera. The model I have is the TL-4000. It hasn't really been a problem, but it doesn't work either. For that reason, I want it to go bye bye.
I have made some good progress. I have removed the brains, and fished 2 of the minor harnesses out. The main harness is a bit more "entrenched", and I have a few questions about it. 1) One wire heads up into the hood and connects to the trunk light. I figure it should be easy to remove it without affecting too much. My question is, would this be supplying power to it? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1396405866.jpg 2) There are a few wires that come off the main harness, with one going down into the smuggler's box. The first 2 pics I have show the main harness and the wire going down into the box. What is it probably connected to down there? I found one wire (red/white) dangling with a fuse connected to it. Maybe PO disconnected? He seemed to think it was still operational as he told me how to shut if off. I don't see the other end where the fuse would plug in. I feel like I should remove it, if I can find it. There are 2 other wires connected to fuses. Can I just remove them or might there be something that I need to replace? I figured out that the wires going down into the smuggler's box end up connected to something in the cavity above the stone guard that covers the front sway bar.
I'm guessing it is the noise maker part of the alarm system, but I'm not sure. I am not prepared to get that far into it at this point, so I will have to wait to find out. |
I found the following connections from the Ungo harness to the luggage compartment fuse block:
3-3: wht/red - from the top-side of the fuse to an inline fuse and then into the harness 1-7: wht/pur - from the top-side of the fuse into the harness 2-1: wht/gry - from the top-side of the fuse into the harness There was also another relay mounted outside the fuse block (looked half-assed) that had a wht/grn wire unplugged from it that went into the harness. It's pretty clear that one of the three POs did enough to disable it, but I am wondering if there is enough there to cause me problems down the road. |
Found out what's hidden behind the stone shield!
I finally got around to taking the stone shield, and I found the horn mounted with a few tie wraps. There may be more to it, but I didn't get to it tonight.
I removed the stone shield, because I'm having a different problem. Though, that is a story for another thread! |
Excellent thread. I really need to remove mine, but never had the guts to dig in like you have. I will be following this thread closely.

This is a very interesting thread because I want to remove mine as well, but worried about the steps and what can happen. rallen911 keep going please.

The only issue I had in removing mine (84 911) was where the yellow starter wire was cut (just under the left side dash where the wire enters the plug that leads to the ignition switch). The wire was too short to solder back together). This is the only wire that will give you real issues as it must be repaired in order to start the car. The others are power, alarm sensors, alarm siren, and grounds. They will not prevent the car from operating.

If it helps, here is the pile of wiring and components I removed with my ungo and stereo cleansing in my 84. The box is top center. Is that what yours looks like?

Mine did not have the combo. It was pretty simple with one or two switches. I am wishing that I hadn't thrown it out!

I was finally able to get under the car to check out the area around the security horn and fuel pump.
I found that the harness going down through the smuggler's box was only connected to the security horn, and did not connect with the fuel pump. That makes me pretty certain that the "extra" relay is wired to allow the security system to disconnect the fuel pump. For now, I just removed the security horn and fished the wires back up through the smuggler's box. |
The stone guard looks to have taken a pretty big hit. I searched our hosts site, but it doesn't appear that there is a replacement available.
It should be OK for now, but just to be safe I'd like to see how much to replace it. |
Stone guard = Protective Plate
So what the Bentley manual calls the "stone guard" is called a "protective plate for steering rack" by our hosts.
I had sent an email, and they said it wasn't available. Either I was not clear, or they misunderstood me. Either way, it looks like it is available. It is on this page: Porsche 911 (1974-1989) - Exterior Trim - Page 6 and is part number 911-341-161-05-OEM. At $116, I'll have to think about whether I really need it. I say this mainly because it looks like whatever happened to it, happened while going in reverse (the impact is on the back side). Not sure I'll be doing any high speed driving in reverse, but I guess we'll see. :) |
I pounded mine back into shape, cleaned it up, and painted it. Looks great.

I thought about doing that, but the metal is actually creased and there is a tiny hole right at deepest part of the dent.
Like I said, it's at the rear of the protective plate, and should be OK for now. |
Excess Wiring
I got busy ripping out the add-on wiring (old Alpine stereo, 2 amps under seat, radar detector) on my newly acquired 86 Cab. It appears that it had an Ungo box or some facsimile in the past. Judging from your pix, I seem to have much the same sort of wiring (no box left and cut wires). I have the relay and some purple wires, red wires, some wires that appear to connect to the tail lights with resistors inline. I assume that was what flashed them when you hit the button. I also have the spliced wiring (trashed) at the hood/trunk-frunk light switch. I kinda ran out of time today and realized that before I started removing my fuse block I'd better disconnect the battery or I would regret it. There were all kinds of splices and I removed most that I could see were not factory. I need to do the headlight relay kit. Thanks for your thread, it helped me realize what I was dealing with. Gotta get out the manuals and get the schematic copied so I don't f**k up too much and hopefully restore some lost function.
