My car interests are bipolar!

I'm becoming dysfunctional. The two cars I am presently tinkering on are the '86 Carrera and the '58 Sprite. I never cease to be amazed at the difference in the cost of parts for these two cars. Just this week I bought a new fan housing for the 911. Cost me $476.00 from Pelican! On the Sprite I want to upgrade the engine from a 1098cc to a rompin stompin 1275cc engine. That engine in running condition should cost be somewhere between $300-$400. I'm not complaining about Porsche parts, I somewhat understand the cost of being in the club, but, damn, it is enough to make my head spin sometimes.

A good friend of mine has a 70 (or so) MGB. That car is a blast, he rebuilt the engine for almost nothing, and a replacement overdrive transmission was recently found for pennies at a local junkyard.

The only thing that scares me about that car are the wire wheels. I never thought of wheels as a maintenance item until he told me about what happens when the splines go bad on that car.

Not a big problem. Splines go bad, you just don't go or if you were already going, you just don't stop.

Oh yeah; the splines! It is a twice a year item to remove the wheel, brush the spline with a wire brush, and relube.

I hear you. My MGB trans cost $250.00 rebuilt/exchange. Add a zero to the right for a 915 rebuild only!

A TR6 hardtop? $350.00. A hardtop for my Targa? I saw one for $2,000.00!

However, that said, the quality and driving experience are quite different - the Porsche is LOVE BABY!

I will say I got A LOT more waves in the MG or TR.

John

Thumbs up

Kurt, I'm with you on the Porsche/Sprite thing. They're both charming in their own way. Sprite parts are sure a lot cheaper, though. And, they make pretty decent racecars.

I'm with you guys on the British v. German thing. Love my TR-6 but it is a whole different thing.

Ditto - people love my Tr-6. Kids run to the curb and wave - everyone asks about it. People pay relatively little attention to the 930 for some reason. Maybe its because the TR-6 is a convertable?

How about a MaxiMog. Remember the thread from a couple of months ago?

'69 TR-6 - which was much faster than the '71 and later cars. They had lower CR and alot of smog stuff. My car runs like a real sports car

I am in agreement with Shawn. A Unimog would be the ultimate! There was one for sale locally a while back. The only compelling reason that I could come up with to buy it was "damn it would look good in the driveway". The wifey shot that idea down.
