Carrera chain tensioners upgrade needed?

Picked up an 82 911 SC with 79k on it. Runs great. I researched posts on the subject and sounds like it is a must to upgrade to prevent future major problems. Asked several local P mechanics and they don't sound too worried about leaving it as is. Said it will give you a little warning when they are going out. Not like it will happen suddenly.
Opinions?? I don't track or abuse the car. Thanks

You can also use 930 tensioners which are also very reliable. Check you have the matching guides and spacers. Pre bleed them with 60W oil.

I prefer the Carrera pressurized tensioners simply for their sheer reliability, especially on street cars.

The older 930 ones are OK if one installs tensioner guards (collars) to prevent total collapse. One simply needs to recognize the rattle on startup when they have failed.

I'd make sure the chain saver collars were installed. If it were my car, I would rebuild the stock tensioners and install the collars if none were present.

I was also wondering about this upgrade.

It would be interesting to know how many SC users on this board have actually had their original chain tensioner fail on them?

And what are the characteristics of a failed or failing chain tensioner?

My car is a '71, but same style tensioner as the SC. When I rebuilt my motor in 1984 I also rebuilt both of my tensioners. I installed the chain saver collars at that time.

In 2005 after about 90K miles I had a tensioner start to fail. The symptoms were a rattling noise on start-up. Not every time, and it went away after a few seconds.

I suspected it was a tensioner, so I bought two new rebuild kits. When I removed the tensioners I noticed that one of them was a little soft and could be compressed some with my fingers.

I learned that chain saver collars work. They gave me the opportunity to make a repair before any damage occured.

1982 sc 48k miles. I was pulling it down and found this. I want to re-build and use collars.....
