carb overflow....

Pulled a car out of two year storage. Started but fuel was dumping from somewhere. Checked all my lines and connections and tightened where necessary. Narrowed the spillage to the number 4 weber. Took off the aircleaners and noticed that fuel was filling up the throat...literally and running out the top of the carb. After the fuel pump was turned off it was still filling up (at a lesser amount). I am thinking that maybe the valve to that float bowl is stuck open and the 3.5 lb pressure in the line is pumping right into the carb? Why would it not be filling up number 5 also? Thoughts?

sounds like a classic stuck check valve. rap on the top of the carb at the big brass hex.

number four is fed by the rear float bowl. five and six are fed by the forward float bowl. so a stuck valve in the rear bowl will only overflow number four.

sheesh. basic weber 101. newbies

Wow, thanks for the heads up. Should I use a rubber mallet, a ball peen hammer, or a small sledge? I have an industrial air rotary hammer...it would work quickly, but would that be overkill? No sense in pulling off the top of the carb to see why the check valve is stuck eh, just smack it? Sounds like a plan.

I'd pull the top off and visually check what is going on, then fix it. It won't take long.
A lot better than it over filling again while you are driving.
Unless you have a monkey in the trunk with a ball peen hammer at all times.

well. I'm a bodyman so my goto is usually a big hammer. but in this case a nice big screwdriver with a hard plastic handle works well. use the plastic end, not the pointy one.

FWIW once you've confirmed the problem I'd just replace the valve, not worth trying to see what's wrong, think you've fixed it, and having it stick again. very good way to start a fire.

I've got a bunch of spares and I'd be happy to send you some. you could pick them up at the mercantile/post office once you dig yourself out of the cabin and hook up the sled dogs.
