1972 911T Side Stripes
This is one of my 1972 911T coupes. This is a viper green car, which was painted red at some point in its life. It's completely rust free and has a recent, complete engine and transmission rebuilds, MFI rebuild, brakes and suspension, etc. Very nice car that is wonderful to drive.
As you can see, it has Porsche side stripes, which were added sometime before I bought the car. My question is, were these side stripes ever used on 911s when they were new or young? I don't mind them at all, but it would not take more than a few minutes with a heat gun to make them disappear. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The car looks great, I would not touch it.
I have been there done that about period correct and on the side stripes even if it was not period I personally would not care. It is doubtful that the car came with all the cibie lights so the car has already been dressed up and it looks fantastic. The stripes add to the look and do not take away. |

Thanks, guys. To be honest, I kind of like the stripes too. I guess it's true about the lights being added later too, though they are original vintage and not reproductions. We know Porsche used these hood lights in the day on their race cars, but I am not sure if this type of stripes would have ever been on a 911 back in 1972. It seems possible, but who knows?

Looks great.
I don't think the front bumper is period correct either. If you like it leave it. As you said, you/next owner can take it off. Bob |

- Your current stripes design is wrong... Too compact...
Look how PORSCHE should take almost the entire door - those are made by Bob Tilton, best ones I know of on the market. ![]() Other thing, that's personal, if you have the bumper deco strip on the back bumper halves, you should put it on on the front bumper as well, or remove both... Just me, looks unbalanced that way... H4s would look great too instead of sugar scoops, with all your rally lights, but again that's personal taste... Nice car !!! |

The stripes aren't correct......but if YOU like them, who cares. I can provide the correct ones if you DO care. I would suggest a darker or lighter color to not have such a contrast.
Nice looking ride BTW.

Keep 'em. You just validated the ones I have on my '73T; but I'd be interested in what Joe Bob has to offer and will PM him.

I read on PP some time ago that they were an available option on my 72.

That's interesting. I'm considering putting a correct set of black ones on my soon to be painted other 1972 911T. That car will be gold metallic, which was its original color. I'll dig through some old books to see if I can find some trace of these being an option. If you knew what I'm sacrificing to finance the rest of the gold car's restoration, you'd understand why I want to be absolutely sure to do it right...

Yes and No..
Yes, stripes of that type were offered as an option/accessory. However, I don't think the font used for the stripes on your car are correct. It always bugs me when I see incorrect stripes... Bottom line,,,,, If it were me, those stripes would come off...period. Then I would decide whether to put on the correct font stripes or leave them off completely. IIRC the stripes were offered in either black or white. I can also suggest Mr Tilton's stripes. They are awesome and correct. I'd personally go to black stripes and I'd also do one more thing to better tie in the additional driving/fog lights on your car... I'd remove the rear bumper T trims and the side T trims and install Tilton Porsche stripes on the sides and also install the front and rear bumper stripes (he provides those also).

Yes, it's Guards Red, but this car is an original Viper Green car.

I've spend hours hand blocking primer to get 911 hoods just right so don't ask me about the lights. I think guys who put holes in 911 hoods for this recent fad of driving lights need to be nailed upside down on the wall by their nut sack.
That said, your car looks great. I would use some flat black to hide areas of green and the front bumper needs the small rubber bumper trim to balance with the rear. The rear deck lid guard can go. I doubt you drive her daily and high frequency parallel parking is a thing of the past. |

If you dont like the decals I will gladly trade you my decal free 911 for your car....
But seriously, the car looks great I would not change a thing. If for anything I have seen some people pull the decals off only to see the paint on the car has faded ever so slightly and although the decal is gone its outline remains. I doubt thats the case here as the paint looks quite clean but just a thought. Regards Dave

The front bumper is an "S" bumper. Compare it to the one in post #7.
