Speedometer ticking noise
Need some advise on if I should ignore this noise and seal up my Speedo after fixing the plastic gear that typically fails in older 911's. Mine is a '82 911SC. Speedo runs fine, odometer and reset buttons work fine since the gear fix. But when I was trying to calibrate I hear a continuous ticking noise that gets faster with speed. I don't think leaving the 3 bulbs not inserted into their sockets on the speedo will cause anything, and the front glass and bezel is not put back on yet. My car does not have a catly conv so assuming no OXY sensor in the car.
Appreciate any input. |
It may be the emissions mileage counter.
I had the same ticking behind the speedo of my 83. The mechanic that did the out of province inspection (Mark at Alpine in Calgary) new exactly what it was and pulled the speedo out and disconnected the counter. There is a thread here somewhere. Edit. Does the car have the little red emissions light in the centre of the dash between the tach and speedo? |
Thanks for the feedback Bill. Yes, there is a red OXS light between the Tach and Speedo.

In my 81 it sounds mechanical but I don't know where the noise is from. Speedo or counter unit? Every time I have the speedo out I just hit the reset button so I have never seen the Oxy light come on. The noise is not that obnoxious. If you can live with it, just hit the button. If billybek knows how to kill it, we can both learn. |
I know there is a thread here somewhere that outlines how to do this.
I do know ( I was in the car when Mark pulled the speedo and disconnected the counter) that it was very quick. It didn't take 1 or 2 minutes from start to finish but I don't know exactly what he did. |
