Transmission won't shift out of reverse

I have owned a 76 911s for over 30 years and it has been sidelined for the last 10. Long story. I finally sent the FD to an outfit I found in N. Carolina on Ebay. Put it in and I heard a sweet sound it has taken a long time to hear.

Finally running, I discovered the transmission is stuck in reverse. The shifter moved through the gears like it felt before but it only worked when the shifter was in nuetral and the wheels will spin backwards. In all 6 gears, the transmission doesn't want to turn and will kill the engine if I let the clutch out.

Any ideas?

Gill

Sounds like your selector swivel in the back seat isnt selecting while swiveling. May be the bushings are gone after 10 years.

remove the backup light switch on the nose of the transmission and push in the pin to pop it out of reverse.

Reverse detent, I think they call it. One of the previous owners, a physician, told me he had to drive it three miles in reverse to get it home.

What it takes to fix permanently, I don't know.

often means that someone previously had the trans apart and messed up the proper placement of one of the internal detents. probably the one in the center housing.
