What is a dummy switch really called?!

I have a 1987 Carerra with a small rectangular piece on the left side of the steering wheel to the left of the ignition switch. Someone punched it through and it's missing. Can't find it in manual or online. Pick attached. Looking for replacement piece or where I can find it? thanks. Mike

I don't think Porsche offered a blank for that hole. You may need to buy the entire cover piece to fix it correctly.

May be cheaper to find a switch that fits the hole. Looks like the the size is about the same as the window up and down switches. Come up with a function for it so it won't be a genuine dummy switch.

No question about that. He won't believe the price for a new one.

Still, the alternative is one step towards the ghetto.

Can probably buy a 3D printer and make it himself, for the price of it

Joking aside... in my car that is the adjustment for the headlights...

Photo :

#4 and #5 in the PET diagram...

Is your car ROW? As far as I know only European cars had this option...

Put an ignition kill switch there. Nobody would ever think you would hide the kill switch in plain sight.
Mine is mounted in one of the knockouts like that.

That rectangle is not a separate blank. It's molded into that dash piece for some reason.

Wanna know how I know? When I bought my 911 last Spring, this is what I had to look at on my dash panel:

Not one but TWO holes in the panel.

Don't try and stick a switch in there. That would look just as bad. Rather, put out a WTB ad here or keep an eye out. I found my piece here in the parts forum for $45. It's from an '85 I believe, so it doesn't have the rectangle molded into it. But it's clean and with no holes drilled into it. It looks a million times better. I don't have a picture handy, unfortunately.

Sorry... forgot the part numbers:

4) 911.631.231.00 - Switch headlight leveling system
5) 911.613.342.01C - Black

Just download the Great Britain version of PET so you can see the part desc and numbers

How well does that work? I've always wondered how much adjustment you get. Do you happen to have any pictures that show where they mounted the vacuum reservoir?

Thanks,
JR

Had the same issue on my sc when I went to 935 mirrors, so I made blanks out of the originals.

Thank you for all the replies! The blank piece used to be there and when I had some work done it was punched out and missing. I'm not sure what a "ROW" is but it's a Canadian car as far as I know. All guages are in English and KM. I'd love to know how else to tell otherwise..? I'll have to put a WTB add and see if I can get a switch for it. Does it have an "official" name? Sorry, I'm learning as I go.. Thanks!

If it originally had adjustable headlights, there would have been a switch there for that purpose, as seen in post number 6, above. It's not a cheap switch. If it doesn't have adjustable headlights, no point in putting that switch in.

If a previous owner added something there, who knows what that might have been.

ROW - Rest of the World cars... term used for non-USA based cars. Slight differences. Reason why I gave you a link to the UK PET so that you can look up any part for your car in there.

As javadog mentioned, if you do not have adjustable headlights, then just cut a piece of plastic, paint it black, insert in there... and be done with it.

Previous owners had made the switch to H4s... so I have the switch in there, but have not traced everything to see what it attaches to... or to see what is left from the swap of the headlights.

My car came from Sweden with a wide body modification with factory parts. So a few things were changed.

So, it's not functional yet, then?

Correct. Not at this time. But I make funny noises while moving the switch, does that count?

Probably not...

Do you have the vacuum canister? I'm curious where they mounted that. There should be a hose coming off of the booster heading to it.

Thanks,
Jeff
