early window regulator (did a search no joy)

I am working on installing the guts in the doors for a 1972 911T Targa. The car was a 10 time loser (10 bad paint jobs...) with more amateur repairs then I have ever seen in my life.

Anyway, the doors were so back I opted to replace them. The last guy installed one late glass regulator and one early one. The issue lies with the installing the early regulator. You would think it would be as easy as just unbolting the part from one door and installing it in the other door.

The issue is the original door had a large chunk cut out of the inner door where I think the piece of 10" track was supposed to bolt up. There was a piece of plumbers tape installed to hold the track for the regulator.

I purchased nice late doors. The crank section bolts up as it did one the early door but there doesn't seem to be a place for both bolts for the 10" track piece.

Anyone have a photo of the inner door and the proper installation of the 10" track for the regulator?

It's hard to follow your decription without photos. When you say 10" track piece, that sounds more like a late regulator, not an early one. There is a service bulletin for installing a late regulator in an earlier door.

Thank you sir. My bad. This is my first 911 experience and there isn't any part of this car that hasn't been messed with. I'm a 914 guy. I can assemble one of those in my sleep.

I made the assumption (ya I know, assume...) that the late regulator was actually the early one as it was installed in an early door with no guardrail. (Left side)

The right door that was also heavily damaged was a late door with a guardrail.

Now I just need to verify the part number for the regulator I have and drill the correct holes.
BTW: the last guy installed the guide rail in an existing hole on the forward end and then used plumbers tape to bridge the gap where the door had been cut out. I never tried the windows so I have no idea if they even functioned.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...eys/spankA.gif

Forget the part number. Just measure the distance between the holes on the "10" track" and use the appropriate dimensions from the drawing. Since you are putting this into a targa, make sure you are using a targa regulator. There is an additional bracket welded onto targa regulators to provide a limit stop for the window travel.

Thanks again. I was just out in the shop looking things over. I have a late door shell with no skin hanging on the wall. I was experimenting with making up aluminum skins and had this as a buck for test fitting. I noticed it has the holes for the track. Duh...

I'll look the regulator over and see if I can detect a stop.

Here's a quick photo I took with my phone.

I have a copy of the original shop manual for the Targas. It was a supplement that relates to adjusting the windows and Targa seals specifically. It was printed in 74 for the release of the impact bumper cars but some of the content applies to the older cars as well. PM me your email and ill send it on over (its a PDF).

We Targa guys look out for each other!

Regards
Dave

You'll find a picture of a targa regulator in this thread:

Must be that funky looking bracket sitting just above the regulator gear right?

How'd you guess? ;) One other thing; there was more than one version of the late regulator and they varied with respect to the design of the stops.
