Rattling steering

My car has been suffering with a rattling or clunking steering wheel when going over bumps. I researched a number of threads and looked at diagrams and figured out that the steering bush was the likely culprit.

I decided to remove the steering wheel and have a look. Kaye had to help wrestle with the steering wheel to remove the nut then the wheel came off easily. I looked expecting to see a broken steering bush but there was nothing there. Either it has broken to pieces small enough to drop out and disappear into the carpet or someone decided that it wasn't necessary when rebuilding.

Anyway, I will be getting one of the Mitch Leland items from our host as it seems like a well thought of solution.

I am gradually working through my car's foibles...

Cheers,

Neil

It doesn't fall into the carpet when it disintegrates, it falls down the tube and maybe ends up in the bearing that supports the bottom of the steering shaft.

That would make sense Javadog - definitely no signs of its prior existence. I am looking forward to an easy fix for the rattle. The car drives beautifully but the clunking is slightly annoying. I am really enjoying ownership and driving the car.

Cheers, Neil

I installed the Mitch Leland bushing after I noticed the steering wheel on my '79SC moving up and down slightly and rattling. That solved the problem.
