rear wiper assembly on flat lid
Hi folks, I used to have a whale tail now switched to flat lid. I want to put the wiper back
and I have the correct bearing purchased. totally confused however as my grille doesn't seem to house the wiper. Presumably there are different grilles? That aside, I have put the nut on the bearing on top of the lid. However, the plastic piece which has a nut shape on the bottom won't slip over the bearing so presumably that is a different part also? Can some kind person send me a photo of the rear wiper assembly please on the flat lid? It is a 1983 911 SC. Thank you very much |

A friend of mine is trying to do the same thing with his '86, reinstall the original rear wiper. He's done quite a bit of research on it and it appears the grill is the same plastic grill without the wiper except for a small hole for the wiper/shaft along the top edge of the grill.
I don't believe there are two separate grills for the cars that came with a rear wiper.

I could well be wrong, but doesn't the wiper assembly connect through a hole in the metal part of the engine lid, not the plastic grill? If the engine lid was originally from a wiperless car, you'll have to drill a hole through the lid. The location is clear from the underside (??).
I am in the same situation as you, and this is what I assumed I had to do. But someone in the know can correct me ... |

Thanks a lot - if he has more info that'd be great. On the spindle in the top side I have : washer, nut , grille, plastic part which is supposed to fit on the nut but doesn't on mine because it can't reach.
Next the wiper, a small nut and then plastic sheath to top it off. The only new wiper part I've bought is a new wiper bearing/spindle. It's shorter than the whale tail spindle. ![]() |

I added a rear wiper to my flat lid car. The plastic grill needs to have a semi-circle relief made in the upper edge. In my case, when I looked at the underside of my engine grill, the underside of the grill had the necessary relief embossed in it. I used a Dremel tool to simply grind the edge to match the embossed relief.
This is the best picture I have, and the car is at home today. ![]()

Looking at your picture again, I think you are correct. Mine does have a tube/spacer between the decklid and the nut.

It must be a particular type as the whale tail spacer is a cm too long ....
I can't see me ordering that from any company plus vat plus postage. Time for some ingenuity me thinks... |

Same diameter as the tailed spacer, but 14mm long instead of 23mm.
