Porsche x Leica
Two of my favourite passions happen to be made in Germany...Leicas & Porsches
![]() Both brands share a long history in craftsmanship & quality and established a luxurious image, took quite similar turns in the past that has made them the companies they are today. Porsche had to turn from their traditional air-cooled engines to water-cooled in order to keep up with the market, Just as Leica moved away from their well known 35mm film format to digital format to satisfy the ever growing demand for a modern platform. Nonetheless, both brands held an idea and perfected it like no other. Porsche kept the engine in the rear and proved it can work, and also created the iconic design of the 911 which is still relevant. Leica continued to develop the range-finder format, which is still available on the digital format and also kept the original design of the Leica M until today. you can still walk into a Leica shop and pick up an "Leica MP" (35mm film camera) which is still built under the same standards that you would have found 50 years ago. Most components that make up both of these brands can be "retrofitted" into a earlier/later model. For example, A Lens designed 60 years ago can be used with a camera model designed in 2013 and vice-versa. the same thing could be said about Porsche, where engine components made today could be used in an engine that was made in the 60s. Such characteristics and similarities are what keep these companies true to their heritage. Where both brands became the standard benchmark for quality performance for their respective competitors. Also both companies share a huge fan-base that created a community that shares a wealth of knowledge & a similar language, referred to as "speaking the porsche lingo" or "speaking the leica lingo" where members and fans of these communities are able to communicate without borders. heres a few photographs that I took using Leica Monochrome for the B&W photos & Leica M9 for the colour photos. I will also include my work that I shot on film in future updates. you can also view my other work with photography on my website www.Royze.jp Thanks for taking the time to read and view the article ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Here's kind of a dumb question, but sort of Porsche-related:
There are at least two dedicated Porsche forums with big marketplace sections where someone who is a Porsche hobbyist could sell excess Porsche stuff up to and including a whole car. Including PP, I might add. When my dad died, he left me a giant box full of still photography equipment, including a Leica M3 with lenses and a light meter and a bunch of other stuff I can't identify. Right now, the stuff is gathering dust in my closet, but I think an enthusiast would have a much better time with this stuff than I am having. Is there a place where folks sell this stuff other than eBay? Last edited by SilberUrS6; 01-18-2014 at 02:26 PM.. |

Thanks for sharing. Nice pictures. This kind of manufacturing philosophy is long gone. Thanks to companies run by bottom line and short term thinking in the modern age; with no passion.

Royze: Nice pictures! Thanks for the link to the website; you have a good eye.
Eric: If you've got an inclination to try photography, I'd hold onto that stuff and give it a go. As stated earlier, any Leica is a great camera (although it may take some cleaning). If you do wish to part with that, post some pics in the off-topic forum and ask for help with valuation. There are a few photography professionals that hang out in off-topic. |

I gave up film over a decade ago. I'm a total hack when it comes to photography, and film photography was very expensive for the return it gave me. I like taking pictures, but I absolutely hated the cost associated with the pics I took. Now, I can run out with my digicam and experiment with exposure and shutter speed and ISO settings and f-stops and all that stuff, and if it turns out well, yay for me! If it doesn't, well, I buy electrons in bulk.

I've been using Leicas for over 40 of my 59 years - and have been rebuilding driving a 1985.5 944 for the past seven years. I totally agree with your perspective regarding the aspects of quality, consistency, and the unique and creatively inspiring experiences offered by both of these great marques.
My current aspiration is to acquire a 911 - preferably either an early 80's SC or later 80's carrera, hopefully one which might need just a bit of wrenching to bring back to spec. But just don't forget...that FILM LIVES!! |

The M3 can fetch from 300~1000$s up to $100,000s+ on classic auctions depending on its condition and and if its a special edition. also, an overhaul of the camera and cleanse could restore it to its original factory condition that could cost from 150~350~400 (case by case) if you could PM me with the details of what you have or a photo I might be able to help you find a price for it. theres also the official forums for leica where you can find other people to assist you. I understand what you mean by the problem with the expenses of film. Everyone is suffering from the prices & major film brands keep disappearing every other day. These days, people mostly shoot with film out of hobby.

Im with you on Porsche and Leica... both wants to hang on to their history, but needs to keep moving forward. I love my M6 and M9... with the new M going to CMOS (digital look) vs previous CCD sensor (film look)... I cant seem to let my M9 go. But Im sure one day Im gonna have to upgrade or so they say.
Just love the look of the sumilux wide open...

I was just about to pull the trigger on Canon DSLR when I read this thread. Started reading about Leicas, going on a trip to NZ and bought the Leica M 240. There are truly many parallels with Porsche.
