Horn intermittent
My 85 911 Targa's horn only works when it wants. Any ideas?

The first thing to do is pull your horn pad and steering wheel to check wiring as well as the horn contact on the back of the steering wheel. The copper contact can become worn and may just need to be bent outwards to improve the contact with the ring on the back of your steering wheel.
Or the wire on the back of your horn pad could be loose causing intermittent functionality. This is any easy DIY to do, search for steering wheel removal threads. The wheel can come off quickly and unexpectedly when you are yanking on it, causing discomfort to your face. You have been warned! Good luck! |

Same problem on my 73.5 was a bad ground of the horn itself. Sometimes wiggling the relay got it to work for a bit...

My SC has a horn relay. Easy and cheap to swap before you go digging in the wiring. The problem may still be the wiring but even if it's not the relay at least you have a spare.

If you find out you have power, the horns are adjustable. There Is a screw to adjust them.

It just hit me that if you check the relay and the horn contacts and they are fine, another thing to look at is the actual horns. I had a rock or something fly up and hit the horns in the front right wheel well. Old plastic coupled with debris cracked the horns and made them come loose. Also worth checking if you don't find the problem someplace else.
