I think that Dr. Evil has the last of thoughs and wants 1 million dollars a can

Actually I think that they stopped making them 4+ years ago in the 16oz can.....and to think that I could have bought a couple cases when it was 98 cents a can. I think that they might still put it in the tanks that are the size of a gas grill propane tank (10+ lbs) but you need to be a repair shop with a recycle machine and reg. Etc.

Sorry that this is not really that accurate but I change over a couple years ago and have not really kept up with it.

I think that we are the only country that gives a damn about this anyhow and it is all about $$$$$. Last I checked several years ago, it was around 50.00 a pound.

Yes it's out there. I had my A/C repaired last week. The freon was $78.00 for 16 units, ounces I assume.

God Bless Texas!!!

If you find any just laying around, there may be bodies buried close by. The last 30# jug I bought was $900.00. That was a couple years ago. I heard about a new drop in substitute the other day for about $7.00 a lb. Why not do the 134A conversion. Change the oil in compressor and put on a new dryer. I think they sell 134A off the shelf.

Cool

Most auto parts stores carry R-12. It's just a controlled substance, and kept behind the counter. You have to be licensed to buy it.
I got the certificate for one afternoon and $20 online. The R-12 is in the $22 a can range.

It is sold on ebay all the time. I have seen "Buy it Now" prices of $600 for 30# cylinders. That's $20 a lb.

I don't think there is a problem sending it in the mail, but if there is, use a private carrier,UPS, fed-ex etc.. not subject to the same regulations.

You can't mail a gun (without a license), but you can fed ex one.

the substitute in use now is freeze-12 which
is available, but if you add it yourself like the old days don,t take it to a shop
that has a recyleing machine because it will
ruin it and add about 4000.00 to your bill.
freeze-12 has a propane additive. i found a
friend of my dads that had a 30lb ball last
weekend and with one person watching the
sight glass, one person adding the gas (with
the engine cover down) and me holding the rpm at 1500 it really cools pretty decent.
i,ve seen r-12 on e-bay mostly from mexican
border states where its still made.
lay some chills

Adam:
GT911 is right on. It's still available, either in your local parts store, or online at Ebay. (Just bought a case there myself).
The thing to do is to get your certification on line. It cost me $15.
Go to the site for Int'l Mobile Air Conditioning Association, Inc. Here's the link: http://www.imaca.org/training.htm

Charge it to your credit card. Print out the 22 page study guide. Take about 1 hr. to read it thru, then take the online test (it's open book) composed of 25 multiple choice answers. You're allowed to miss up to 2 questions & still pass. Take the test while the information is still fresh in your mind.
The whole procedure took me 1 1/2 hrs. I believe I got all the q's right, although they don't give you a score. The test is graded immediately upon completion & you can print out your temporary certification immediately. If you take it this evening, you can buy r12 tomorrow.
Hint: To be able to look up material quickly, print out & pay attention to the table of contents as you study the guide. The table of contents is misnumbered from page 7 forward, so change the page numbers as you review the material so you don't lose time taking the test. I don't know what happens if you flunk it; probably have your Porsche confiscated. Good luck.

Is this certification valid in all states? R12 can be purchased in Mexico, problem is bringing it back. I suppose if you live within a reasonable distance to the border you can fill-up on the Mexican side and return, no problem.

Don't buy Freeze 12. I have heard of a couple of compressor failures. If you ask around, I think you will be able to buy R-12 from someone with the connections. I live in Southern Cal and know of some mechanics that will check around for me. You might come across someone with a 30lb bottle that can spare a couple of pounds for you. Also, do not buy 12 that has been recovered from another system. More than likely it's contaminated. An F-134 conversion will produce a weaker system from what I'm told. If I make it another few weeks, won't need to worry about it!

Movin:
I don't see anywhere in the materials that there is any particular state restriction... I do believe the section 609 certification under the Clean Air Act is a federal mandate which is recognized by all 50 states.
There's a ton of r12 available on ebay for purchase once you've obtained your certification. The test is a bit nit-picky, but isn't really difficult.
regards,
jlex.

Adam:
If you bought some off ebay, you must have obtained the certification.... what'd you think of the test? Have any problems? Easier than replacing those CV joint bearings, I'll bet. Don't forget to pick up some compressor oil from time to time to be on the safe side.
regards,
jlex.

yup. got certified last night. the test wasn't too bad, although i'd swear there were a couple questions that seemed like they had more than one answer... i had read through all 20 pages of study material beforehand, and i still needed to double-check the text for most of the questions to be on the safe side... took me about 45min total.

i'll keep the oil deal in mind, thanks. looks like i won't be taking my car into the dealer for a recharge, after all... thanks again for the tip!!!!!!!!!

Good for you! Ought to be plenty of heat left in Atlanta this year to make your trouble worthwhile. It's been a long time since I've taken a test of any kind, and was double-checking my material as well. The only fear I had was that my internet provider would time me out while I was in the middle of taking the thing: don't know what would have happened then.
Hint to others: when taking the test, open up another browser window & go to that window if you're taking too long on a question just to keep your local internet provider happy so your connection isn't timed out.
regards,
jlex.
