groan when turning left
hi guys,
a problem developed over the weekend. when i am making a left hand turn i hear a groaning noise (feel a little something in the steering wheel also). it is very evident when in a parking lot and making a left u-turn. doesn't happen on right turns. tires are practically brand new and were fine for the last month. ???????????????? ------------------ Daryl 964 Targa |
Sounds like you may have a wheel bearing going out. If you can feel it in the steering wheel, it is most probably a front bearing. I would check the bearings before I drove it any further. Jack up the front so the wheels are off the ground. Grasp the tires at the top and bottom and see if there is any play in the bearing as you try to wiggle them back and forth. Also rotate the tires and see if you feel any grinding.

thanks kurt,
last night i jacked up each front wheel, shook them and there was no play. i spun them and heard no noise. i think then it is probably not a bearing. if the power steering is going, would it only affect turns in one direction? any other thoughts? http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/jump.gif ------------------ Daryl 964 Targa |
I had a similar problem with my 87 and it turned out to be a brake caliper dragging.

daryl-
i don't know about p-car power steering, but when my power steering pump went on one of my jeeps, i only had problems with left turns, too. the wheel would 'catch' at times on turns, especially on quick ones. i have also read about power steering pump failures that mimmick this same behavior on other cars, also. i wouldn't be suprised if that was your problem. ------------------ Adam Nitti ajnitti@mindspring.com www.adamnitti.com '85 911 Carrera Coupe '72 BMW 2002tii (new arrival) '97 Grand Cherokee Limited Peachstate PCA member [This message has been edited by adamnitti (edited 09-11-2001).] |
