the gear shift coupling in my 911SC 1979 is shot. Ive brought a whole new unit which I will be fitting at the weekend. does anyone have a step by step instruction on how to do this. Im assuming its pretty straight forward but would like any advice I can get .

Thanks

Neil

You may be able to find what your looking for right here on this site. Go up to the top bar of this page and look around in the Tech Info area.
Have fun!

The directions are here in the tech area, if they are not for replacing the coupler its self take a look at the directions for changing the bushings as they will have a step by step on removal and installation. For the good of the community please do not throw away your old coupler they can easily be rebuilt and are often in need by fellow members here. You can always post it for sale in the parts section and try to make some of your money back.

Regards
Dave

It pretty much boils down to:

1. Put car in first gear
2. Pull back carpet
3. Remove 4 screw access panel
4. Unclamp coupler from shift rod
5. Remove cone screw
6. Remove coupler
7. Install new coupler
8. Install new cone screw
9. Align shift rod with trans
10. Reclamp coupler
11. Replace panel/carpet

Optional steps:

-Replace outer coupler boot(easy)
-Replace inner coupler boot(harder)

Both are likely needed/cheap if your car is 35 years old.

I've done this, and it isn't too hard at all. But there was one step I found in the workshop manuals that I had neglected to do. The result was improper or imprecise gear selections (like going into third when I wanted first). I don't remember off hand what the step was, but I think it was to move the shift lever all the way to the right (or left) as you connect the coupling. That way, the right teeth engage the right grooves, making gear selection very precise. It's worth doing a bit of research before doing it, that way you'll only have to do it once.
