"PORSCHE" rear reflector with black letters on a 87 Carrera?
I purchased a 74-86 rear reflector with black "PORSCHE" letters to put on my 87 Carrera. The rear reflector currently on the car has the subdued smaller Porsche script. I trying to "backdate" my car to a 74 Carrera look - and this is one of my first steps. I thought it would be a simple bolt on, but I guess I was wrong. If you look at the pics of the two, the older reflector (top) has two sets of bolts that are supposed to attach it to the rear bumper. However, my car only has holes in the body work for the bottom bolts and not the top. The reflector currently on the car doesn't use bolts, but has a plastic clip that digs into the hole and a flange that is held down by fasteners attached to the car (pic).
Has anyone done this? Any suggestions? The only thing I could think of was swapping the plastic parts that have the bolts/clips on them between reflectors. I can see some daylight behind them, but did not want to try pry them off until I could find out whether they are supposed to come off or are glued on. I don't want to damage either one. Any help would be appreciated. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

OK not much luck getting a response there - can anyone with a black lettered rear reflector tell me if the back of their's looks like the top one (with the bolts and nuts) or like the bottom with the plastic clips? 84-86 guys and gals - what does the back of yours look like. If there is a black lettered one that attaches the same way as my current one, then I will just re-sell this one and get one of those to avoid excess body work.
If this is the case, does anyone know what year they made the change? Cheers,

The best, and probably easiest, way to fix this is to weld in an early reflector section. By the time you drill the new holes , fill the old holes on the horizontal section, you could have welded in the support that allows correct mounting of the early reflector
we have a few (wonder why... ) of these available for $30 plus shippingdv

Thanks for the reply
![]() What do you think about swapping the plastic attachments on the back of the reflectors? I want to keep the option of easily going back to stock, and I would much rather cut into a couple of plastic parts than my car. The attachments (especially on the newer one) look like they have been bonded on (they are a different color). Either I could try to pry them off or cut them with a dremel (I checked and they are only bonded at the top and the bottom) and epoxy them to the other one. Thoughts?

Good idea! If you have steady hands and eye protection, go for it. You can do the same to the early part and swap tabs around
a good plastic glue, or cyanoacrylate (crazy glue) should do the trick with attachment

Wow it's been a long time, but I am updating this thread. The gluing on of the brackets didn't work. Can anyone show me with a pic where exactly the cut out the old reflector support? I'd rather be sure before I cut. Thanks.

Just drill some damn holes in your valance thingy. if it bolts up nice then your good to go. If not well you'll be welding in that new piece.

I did this a few years back ... it was pretty simple. You can use a heat gun to soften the glue on the newer style brackets then pry them off and glue them with urethane adhesive to the older black lettered reflector after you grind off the mounting studs.
I had posted some pics at the time ... pm me if you want more info and i should be able to dig them out for you ! Cheers Phil

Found the pics ... a little bit of grey primer to restore the backside, some urethane adhesive, some aluminum tape to position/fit everything and you're all set !

Tony - if you get the mounting brackets off the early reflector in one piece shoot me a PM - I'll buy them from you. I'm repairing my reflector and most of my studs pulled through the plastic.

Sorry don't have them anymore Chris.
As far as drilling holes - yes could be done, but I thought it would be a pain to try to get them to line up straight. That's why I was leaning to just welding the new piece in.

Actually I guess it doesn't hurt to try to drill the holes in my current 87-89 piece before I remove it. I can use the factory 74-86 part I purchased to create a template to increase the chances I get the holes to line up right. Will let you know how it goes.
As far as the glue - I couldn't find good enough stuff. I think with all of the heat and vibration it is challenging for any adhesive.
