Strange behaviour 86 carrera

Hi guys. Well another season and another problem has arisen. I swear ine of these years i will get a good driving season. When i took the car out this year everything was good for the day of driving. Now however there is a strange noise coming from the drivers side rear area. It only happens when i turn right. Not straight or turning left at any speed. When turning right however, even at 5 mph there is a slights metallic creak sound. It sounds rotational. I would say as fast the wheel is turning but i am not sure. When i go faster the noise turns into a very noticeable clunk, can feel it in the car, this noise is rotational as well. I have had the car on the lift and cannot see anything obvious at all. I have had the wheel off and checked axl nut, its fine. I also checked the boots on cv, they look ok and pulled on the axel which felt fine. Everything looked and felt the same as the right side. Looked at the trans mounts and motor mounts, seem ok as well. The shocks were replaced two years ago with bilsteins, they seem ok, cant get them to make any noise at all applying bouncing pressure to either side. I cant get the sound at all when not driving and turning right. I grabbed the left wheel and tried to move it but there is no play at all. I am really out of ideas so some tgoughts would be great.

To sum up, only does it when turning right. A metallic creak sound(think metal matress spring) at low speed and a clunk at higher speed. Both sound rotational. Car drives fine besides that.

probably way off, but since you didn't mention it, have you checked your rear driver's side sway bar mount? These can crack off and make a creaking/clunking sound when they bounce around. Relatively straightforward to have a new mount welded back together

That's a good point. Just checked and it seems ok as well as the bushings. Thanks though

I just had my rear driver's side wheel bearing replaced... made kinda similar noises. I'd almost put money on it.

Mine made this light "clicking" sound when turning ever so slightly off center. The sound was directly related to speed. I also had a low rumbly / groaning sound as well at higher speeds. The pitch would change if you turned from left to right as the bearing experienced loading and unloading.

It could also be the CV joint though I've told the bearings don't last that long, particularly if you track it.

I recently had a noticeable "ticking" or "tocking" sound coming from driver's rear (not mine). The sound was rotational in nature, increase with speed but NOT engine RPM and was most evident at cold start gradually fading. It was somewhat intermittent. The CV joints were flipped and the noise completely disappeared.

Wheel bearing…
Do both, not just the right side.
