A friend's father just called him from Oklahoma City. Gas is $6.00 a gallon. Probably won't be any gas in the morning. Gas replenishment may be cut off until the reserves are stabilized. Lines were forming at 1730 here in Shreveport.

There is no reason for gas prices to increase other than price fixing and price gougeing. Personally, I'm more fearful of the stock market dropping than higher gas prices since the financial center of the world was hit. We had gas lines starting about noon in KC. However, I think the fear is baseless since there has been no attack on our oil supply in the US and Afghanistan does not have any oil. This is a pure case of gougeing and the understandable fear of uncertainty on the part of Americans. In a few days, the lines will go away.
I think in every city, we should list the locations of the gas stations that are taking advantage of the situation (nothing to do with supply and demand) and boycott them for the next few weeks. This is how you send a message. I know when I lived in Houston, there were laws against price gougeing during catastrophies like Hurricanes. I don't see this situation as any different. The surest way to start a shortage or panic is to say there IS a shortage or others ARE panicing.

I contacted a friend of mine on hearing this news (he is oil& gas attorney). He said the pipeline had been shut down due to automatic procedures in place. They prevent distribution of gasoline until the reserve supplies are stabalized. Not trying to start a panic, just a heads up.

On the way back from running errands (@7:30pm) I stopped and got fuel and was one of two people paying the usual 1:25 a gal. I read your post and went back out to fill up my other car @ 10:00pm, this time, the only one there, same price. This is a big intersection with stations on three of the corners. All had minimal activity and no price increases. I'll let you know if it goes up by tomorrow.

A gas station raising their prices today is taking advantage for their own financial gain. Nothing more, nothing less. The gas already in thier tanks did not cost them any more. Their supplier did not raise prices for todays deliveries, orders for which probably happened before todays tragic events.
I got gas on the way home today, no more crowds than normal, and prices seemed about the same as last time I filled up. Tom Aiken Fremont, CA |

Her in NY Mayor Giuliani just cautioned shop owners about price gouging, saying they will be dealt with pretty severely. Although he was talking about food and supplies I'm sure gas would be covered as well. And I wholeheartedly agree- boycott those that do gouge. Capitalism is one thing, but to take advantage of people in a crisis is morally wrong.
