Jb weld going to work?
Hi,
![]() My first post here on this forum since getting my 86 Targa a month ago...abosultely love the car, and love this forum! I had my first "issue" yesterday with the car, the right side view mirror started getting shaky on the way home, checked it out and the metal claw that the allen bolt screws through to keep the assembly onto the door cracked in half! ![]() Not sure how this gave way just like that...it is a 23 year old car though and I guess vibrations and rough roads take their toll over time. I applied jb weld on the two claw pieces, holding it together carefully as it cures for the next day now. My question is, will it be as strong as it was, enough for me to screw the claw down again? Since it would be really crap having the side view mirror fall off at any speed (would scratch the door)....I just want to know jb weld will "hold", as I've never used anything like it before to bond metal. Thanks, Dan ![]()

E komo mai Magnumpi,
I don't think it will last very long. My suggestion is to put a "wanted to buy" ad in the for sale forum for the part that is broken. Who knows someone might have a whole mirror to sell you that's painted the same color as your car. Good luck and have fun. |

I've had excellent experiences with JB Weld. Farmers use it to fix cracked engine blocks, stuff like that, so I should think it could hold a 911 mirror. It's been around forever and is not some kind of Billy Mays miracle-whip.

Hey Dan,
Welcome to the forum! You certainly don't have anything to lose by trying the JB Weld stuff, there are a few different types and I am not too sure which would be the best application for that. Nice looking car, enjoy it. If you see a young fella admiring your car, named Ryan (lives in your community) that is my nephew... Cheers!

Call Oklahoma Foreign and have them throw the broken part in an envelope and mail it to you. Intresting handle fan of the show or the actor?

Thanks for the responses. I've been reading up a bit on Jb weld and it seems like it cures harder than steel, so I may have a shot, we'll see.
This "claw" piece is hard to find, going to take some luck to source it...I may dry the dealer if this doesn't work. I can't really drive the car until this is solved ![]() Loved Magnum PI, one of the best shows of the 80s !!!!!!!! Oh and his ferrari 308 was nice too ...... ![]()

Might as well try it, only costs $5 to try. . . . If not, then +1 for Oklahoma Foreign, maybe DART Auto in Denver, lots of places. Just don't try "that one place".

My inside mirror broke at the narrowest part of the stem and I JB-Welded that back together. John Walker said that would never hold, but it's been over a year and it's still fine.
![]() But he's right - you should replace the hook as the stress on that part is pretty high. You can find the part number in this thread, thanks to brother Shane: Need a teeny tiny part

+1 on what John said as for Magnum I was stationed in the islands in the 80s while the show was on I ran into the actors often got to talk to Roger Mosley for quite awhile one night while I was in his club he wanted to know more about the 911. Saw the ferrari many times parked next to it once when I was out for coffee and had a chance to talk to the real owner there were actually 5 or 6 308's over the course of the show as the owner bought a new one or when they shot on another island they would transfer the plates to that car. the opening sequence where he is on a curvey road that is on Tanalus drive and a great road to drive lots of hairpins and switchbacks on the way to the top. Call Gary at Okla. For. and tell you got referred by Jerry Smith in missouri and I am sure he will have a broken mirror he can get one off of. Have you tried the parts diagram here on pelican usually they can get just about anything so long as its not NLA or just buy a flag mirror for the parts for sale and keep the rest for spare parts.

Thanks for the schematic drawing, that's the piece exactly (#4)...and thanks for the cool Magnum story! Hey, maybe they'll bring back Magnum to TV....but with better results hopefully than other 80s remakes (i.e. Knight Rider).
As for JB weld, been 6 hours since applied...part seems strong as new...at least as far as my sqeeze test goes. I guess (hope) it will get stronger over night as it cures. Figure I'll try this out and watch it closely, if it is strong enough to tighten the mirror back to the car. I'll order another claw anyway, if I can source one. Since it will take a few weeks at least to source one anyways, I can't be without my car that long, summer is going by waaaaay to quickly! ![]() Go JB weld !!! Cheers, Dan

JB Weld cures a little slow. Mild warming can help, just don't overdo it. In any case I'd give it at least 24 hours before trying it. But it looks like the part is less than $10 from the dealer, so a new one is definitely in order.
