80 sc chain tensioner rebuild

I purchased two rebuild kits for my chain tensioner rebuild and started on them today. I have a factory manuel and followed their directions. Everything is fine until I try to slide the piston back in to the tensioner with the small snap ring attached in the groove in the piston. Everything slides in until I get to the small snap ring. how do you get the small snap ring to compress and slide down the tensioner body. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am interested in the same thing. I found some info in the Haynes book I got used on amazon for 10 bucks.. I looked for a thread here but could not find one. I hope people will respond to your post with re-building help. it would be helpful for a step by step with pictures......carl

with the tensioner in a vise, push the plunger down and use a smallish screwdriver to set one side of the snap-ring into the groove, on an angle of course. do not look directly down on the plunger. it can pop out and do some eye damage. as you hold the first screwdriver tightly against the snap-ring, use another one to push the other side in place. may take a few tries.
