Dead pedal question...
I would like to install a dead pedal in my '83 targa. (The carpet in the lower left footwell is worn out and needs to be replaced)
Problem: I have big feet (13). Will a dead pedal further restrict my footroom? It's a fairly intricate ballet pounding the brake and clutch pedals now, I don't want big trouble. Any big-footed targa drivers with dead pedals out there?

I've got an 83 cab w/ the Rennline pedals, including the dead pedal, and can tell you that a sasquatawan friend of mine who drove it the other day kept getting the outer edge of his left foot snagged on the pedal. It did not make for a comfortable ride being a passenger in my own car when the driver did't have really good control of the clutch!
Anyway, I've got small feet, and even I get stuck if I wear really wide shoes - like my construction boots. I'd be really hesitant to install it if I were you. Good luck Adam |

I have an AJ USA dead pedal in my coupe, that came with the car. I wear a size 12 shoe, and have no problems. Of course I don't drive with my work boots on either, but usually running shoes, or my Piloti driving shoes.
Ask Thom (widebody911) what he does. If memory serves me correct, he has the biggest shoe size on the board. |

The footwells are smaller in the targa then they are in the coupe and most dead pedals will not fit in the targa and those that do restrict the ability for those with targa footwell challenged feet even more.

I wear a size 10 and if I wear shoes with big soles, there's a good chance my outer sole could catch the dead pedal if I don't recenter my foot away from it. The floor of my cab is the same as your Targa. I'm used to it now, and don't catch it, but if you wear a 13, and construction boots, it will probably be very cramped. You could also just go with recovering that worn out panel with a small new swatch of German silverknit carpet.

Moses, I have the AJUSA dead peddle in my Targa. It does not take up much room as it mounts over the wheel well portion in the cabin. I wear a size 11 (my wife says its more than enough) and I have no problems with lack of room for my feet. I don't know, but maybe the coups take more room away from the feet since the that area of the care is different between the Targa and Coupe.
BTW, the dead peddle was one of the best mods I have made to my Targa.

I seem to recall someone cautioning in an earlier post that there is some ESSENTIAL wiring (DME?) that is behind that particular carpet, so be careful before you drill.

Yes, there is a DME wiring harness right behind one of the screw holes on my dead pedal and when I installed mine, I made the dumbass assumption that there was nothing there. Well low and behold, I screwed into wiring harness and blew out my DME! I was ready do start shopping for a DME, when I started to follow the traces in the circuit board and tracked it to a proprietary Bosch component which I suspect was blown. I ended up having going to a self serve junk yard and gutting the suspect part from a '88 944 DME, soldered it back into my box, and luckily fixed my box.
