80 sc chain tensioner rebuild

This is driving me crazy. I have assembled the rebuild parts except the small snap ring. Everything that goes inside the piston fits fine. I flip the tensioner body over the piston parts and everything slides to place. It is now time to install the small snap ring. Exactly when does this part get installed. Do I put it inside the tensioner body before sliding the body over the piston and it parts? Does the snap ring fit in the groove in the body before I slide the piston and it attached parts into the body? Thanks
