I am hesitant to use a floor jack on my 77"911s. Are there any safe places to position the jack and not damage the car? Also once up where can jack stands be positioned? I would like to rebuild my front end and then replace the axles. If anyone has a pic or diagram email me at muzeeshun@aol.com

Also, buy Wayne's book, "101 projects for your Porsche." It is extremelly helpful. I jack my car up in the back under the engine block, and place jack stands under the torsion bar covers. Jacking the front up is a little more tricky because you need to find the exact spot. Again, follow mm83targa's advice and do a search. Maybe there will be a diagram in a previous post.

Definitely buy the "101 Projects" book...it has a discuss on jacking up the car and positioning jack stands. Also, buy yourself a jack pad. Pelican sells them. For $15, you'll save yourself a lot of grief.

Hey guy's! Thanks for the reply to my floor jack question. I will pick up on the "101 projects" book. Sounds great. I have the jack pads already. I was hoping there was another alternative for lifting the car.

This is a shot of the Jack Pad in Pelican's Catalog:
Available here. I think the safest way to lift the car (rust not withstanding) is via the jack pads into the jacking points in the rocker panels. Make sure you insert it all the way in. I'm in the camp that does not like lifting the car via the engine - not worth the risk to me (see Roland's response to this thread.) Not sure about a 77, but in my 87 there are obvious places near the inner wheel arches where the jack stands can go. Unsprung suspension points are other good spots. When I have it up in the air and am working under it - yanking on bolts and stuff, I always leave the tires under the car. Just in case the yanking pulls it off a jack stand, or in case a jack stand fails. Belts and suspenders... Good Luck!

Jacking up the car under an engine that is
notorious for oil leaks has never seemed like a terrific idea to me, especially seeing as how the manual says to never lift the car there. I don't know why the factory didn't put red " JACK HERE " stickers under the car in the appropriate spots.

Hmmm, well I lift mine at work with a forklift. I welded up a little jig/fixture that contacts the rear engine mount and slides over the forks. I'm sure something similar could be built for a floor jack. Lately though I've been thinking of just Tig welding a lifting plate to the rear engine mount rather than fuss with lining up my lift. Due to the age of my car and evidence (small paint cracks) of trouble around the jack points on the side I don't lift from their at all. I also have a fixture I made for my floorjack that lifts from the torsion bar covers that I originally built for my bosses tube frame TVR, just slip it in the jack and lift. I'll have to take some pix of the jigs I made as I'm sure even an average welder/metal worker could make them up.

I'm with Don P. on putting the wheels under the car when I have it lifted. Just a little extra insurance
.As far as lifting the front, I use a 2x6 piece of lumber on my jack, placed under the skid pan to lift the front. |
