1982 911SC Fuel Tank coating
HiHi All.
I took the belly pan off my SC when upgrading the tie rods and noticed a smell of petrol. The belly pan has damp patch under the fuel pump and the rubber fuel hose collars were rusting badly so I decided to replace the lot. (After viewing a few threads here, I decided to just replace the collared / crimped end fuel hoses from the fuel pump to the bulk head, rather than both lines right back to the engine and that has worked fine). However, there were a few rusty scratches on the underside of the fuel tank, so I decided to remove the tank to clean and repair it. After scraping the crud and grime off, I can see tge original factory coating on the tank, which is a thick grey rubber-like paint. There were a few rusty dents in the tank, so I ended up scraping and sanding the whole underside back to bare shiney metal. My question is, has anyone done this before and what is the best product to paint it with? I was thinking of a couple of coats of anti-rust primer that is specifically made for car bodies, with a few coats of body underseal? Or are there products that will recreate the original grey "rubber" coating? This site has been invaluable whilst restoring my old Porker and this is my first post - so thanks in advance for any help you can give. |

I'm no expert - I'm answering as I'm in a similar predicament. The concensus seems to be UPOL Gravitex which is a UK stone chip.
There doesn't seem to be a wurth equivalent now. I'm considering two part 3M Underseal which comes in packets and needs a special gun which attaches to the packets. It's expensive. |

Other than shine a light in via the filler and sender hole, what other inspection can I do?
The bottom of the tank had only very minor rust so I don't think there's any possibility of a rusted hole. Other than removing the drain plug and flushing any crud out with fresh fuel, what would you suggest before the tank is reinstalled? Thanks |

When I took the tank out I found this - a Porsche napkin wedged under the tank !
I guess the installer left it behind by accident during assembly. Unfortunately I dropped it in my drip-tray - but it's getting framed and will hand in my garage ! ![]() wed |

I thought I'd update this thread. I started peeling back the coating where there were obvious chips and rust, only to find out that the rust spreads under and well beyond the area where the coating was damaged. I ended up taking the lot back to bare metal. Then followed three coats of brushed-on isopon zinc 182 paint and three spray coats of stone chip. I'll load some photos.
