I currently have a 924 , 944 , 911sc and 928.
Extensive reading leads me to believe they all have extremely strong bottom ends.
There's a common theme there. You tend to hear the word "overengineered" and Porsche quite a lot.
But the usual caveat of proper oils and reasonable change intervals apply. My sc had a PO full rebuild for bad studs and a spun bearing. 1/2 of that was avoidable.

1st n 2nd gear are being addressed as well.

I think this is a good move. I did mine this winter after finding a broken head stud. My thinking was that I didn't plan to do this whole engine drop and rebuild thing again, so whatever I might want done in the next 20 years I did, but only if there was an indication of a problem. I only opened up the bottom end because the oil report had some suspicious numbers. I only replaced the cams because there was some pitting and scuffing on some of the lobes (http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/789817-start-maintenance-end-disaster-opportunity.html)

So I ended up with new suspension bushings, rebuilt rear shocks, lots of powder coated sheet metal, 964 cams, and many niggly things addressed. And many smiles. Go for it!

Man, that gave me the serious giggles. I'm pleased I wasn't drinking hot coffee at the time.

Just my opinion. I have no brains of my own I just quote you guys... I would definitely do the cams while it is open. I hadn't heard of this Super SC grind but it sure sounds fun, 20 21 grind or 964.

Bob

From what I understand 9.5:1 and 9.8:1 pistons and 964 cams will pass smog in Cali. Don't know this first hand, but this is the direction I'm going to go.

I'd simply go with new Viton o-rings and Dow 55.

DC 55 weakens Viton significantly. Go with an inert grease to maintain maximum seal strength.
