Nostalgic's opens the compressor clutch at 398 PSI, 'way to high for our A/C systems.

Red Dot at 325 PSI will still be pushing the "limit".

Can this or alternate be used with my 81's R-12? I still have a stash of the good stuff left.

Thanks wwest. Same set up I am using with the Red Dot trinary switch. After digging through my stash of bits, I had grabbed the wrong switch and yes the threads on the R5-4585-0 threads are the same as the ones on the Nostalgic. I just wish the my Red Dot electric plug wasn't so large.
So, I assume you are wiring the Red Dot in as same as you would with the Nostalgic.
