Brake question please.
On my 85 911 I'm changing the pads out on the front. I notice slight grooves in the rotor so I want to have them turned. The tech article from this site says to remove two Phillips head screws and the the disc will pull off easy. I cannot find those two screws. If someone could help me locate and find the screws that would be nice. thanks, Nick

I have an '84 and the fronts are bolted to the hub. The rears have a small screw that holds them against the hub before you put on the wheel. Which tech article are you referring to?

Fronts are bolted to the hubs, you must remove the entire assembly and separate the hub. Rears have the two small screws that help hold it in place.

If the grooves aren't bad, I'd just leave them as-is.
At $66 per rotor, it might be worth just replacing them rather than machining them.

Don't bother have them machined..it is a false economy..they will warp sooner or later.
Get some Zimmermann Z coated rotors..very nice |

Thanks very much. I was looking at the wrong article. Just finished rear pads. rotors were smooth. Fronts have very slight lines. All are well within spec for thickness.

I would not suggest resurfacing the rotors either. On a domestic or Japanese car it would be fine but on a European car the metal used for brake rotors is much softer and as a result the lathe will take too much material causing the rotor to warp as db_cooper suggested. The reason for the softer metal is as the brakes heat up they get grippier. Yes they will not make 40-60k like you will find on a Chevy or Nissan or anything like that but those cars also do not stop like your 911 either. Your pads will bed in to match the surface of the rotor within a couple hundred miles and you will not notice a difference especially since you said the rotors have plenty of meat on them.
