Silver paint? Yeah Right. Remember that 100W is twice the heat and current for maybe 20% extra light output. If the reflectors look OK then all good, the ones I have a tarnished and need recoating, I believe it needs a zinc base then some sort of aluminised surface, not simple chrome.
I do have a few H1 assemblies so PM me if you get stuck for an adjuster or whatever. I have a grand plan or rebuilding them one day. One day. |
Thanks Porboynz, I have understood your point with regards reflectors. It is surprising the range of views on many subjects on here (and most other car forums) - observation rather than criticism. I read that the original reflectors were aluminium coated (mirrored) so I may look into it depending on the condition of the reflectors. As I mentioned they looked alright but that was without the benefit of the lens removal.
I imagine that giving them a clean and the inside of the lenses will also help although I do not perceive that either are filthy. You are most kind to offer parts. I will look into fabricating something to replace the broken adjuster. I think there is only one. I can see the use of chemical metal to create a replacement but I will see what works. I enjoy challenges like that. I know some may be critical of the use of non-original parts but I am happy to make-do where I can. It isn't as if you can see the odd adjuster having been coggled together. As long as it works and I can adjust the lights correctly. If I cannot get something to work then I will PM you to see if you can help out - cheers again. Regards, Neil |
Do be careful cleaning the reflectors, the softest cloth and mild soap and warm water at best. Others might have a better method. That surface is very easily damaged and best left untouched and dirty than clean and damaged. When I was a lad I wrecked a telescope mirror cleaning it not realising I was scratching the very delicate silver coating.

Your best bet is to take the old bulb into Repco,

Porboynz, I definitely will be extremely careful with the cleaning if I undertake it at all. I need to partially dismantle the headlight assemblies to address the broken adjuster and clean the lenses. I will either leave the reflectors as they are or use mild soapy water as you suggest.
vdxgzhen, I already have the bulbs I wish to use. I just haven't installed them yet as I want to fix the headlight units and wiring first. It is great to have the benefit of other people's experience on this forum. I will take some photographs when I undertake the partial strip-down (etc.). Cheers, Neil |
Restoring an H1 headlamp
I undertook the restoration of my H1 Headlamps and thought others may be interested.
Regards, Neilhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1400934708.jpg I removed the headlamps and realised that there were some missing components. I managed to cannibalise a VW headlamp to gain some parts and fabricated a missing part. Hopefully the pictures are helpful to others. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1400934892.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1400934921.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1400934953.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1400934978.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1400935043.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1400935072.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1400935140.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1400935175.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1400935236.jpg Extremely chuffed - completed the work cleaned the reflectors, rewired the headlamps, put the new bulbs in. I have managed to make sure that the missing components of the adjusters were replaced and fabricated a bracket that was missing. The headlamps work very well now but do need to be adjusted. Cheers, Neil |
You might want to put the correct lenses on them....

Javadog, I will definitely get some H1 lenses if I can find some. I am sure they will make a difference.
Cheers, Neil |
Looking good, must get onto refurbishing my H1's. Any day now.

I decided to check the aim of the headlights as I didn't have opportunity to do so the other day. I found that the driver's side was pretty good with respect to dipped beam but the passenger's side was far too dipped. I was able to adjust the dipped beam on the passenger's side very easily. Happy Days!
I will try the correct complete set-up as set out on this forum and in Daniel Stern's website at the weekend. I am a very happy person with the light output and the fact that the lights can be adjusted. Cheers, Neil |
