Plastic sheet vapor barrier in door

I removed my door liners recently to replace the old speakers. There was no vapor barrier/ plastic sheet thingy on either door, so I ordered new ones from mine host. My question is---exactly where does it attach? Do you cut holes for the speakers and leave them out in the wet? I can't seem to get my head around this.

yes... rubber cement it to the door and cut out a hole for the speaker, window switches, etc.

I used 3M rope caulk to attach my barrier sheets to the inner door. Tacky, non-hardening and can be bought in a box of strips or larger roll. Usually 1/4, 3/8" diameter. You can take a piece and stretch it so it's really thin. Run a strip around the perimeter of the door and stick the barrier to it. Yes, you'll cut out for the speaker holes. Search around you can find water shields or foam baffles to insert behind the speakers. I ended up opening up the bottom third of my baffles b/c when sealed my speakers sounded like crap. Search the door speaker threads here for pics. -J

Butyl Rope, strip caulk, window weld are all about the same.

Actually spray adhesive and black heavy garbage bag that is sliced open work great and is easily replaced. I then use a razor to cut the outline and any required holes.

The best way to get your head around this is to think of the inside of the door as the outside of the car.

The vapour barrier that you are installing forms the wall between inside and outside.
(inside stays dry and outside can get wet, which is why doors have drain holes).

Here is where it attaches:
-Cut holes through for anything that has to protrude into the inside 9 like foot handles
-Caulk or seal the vapour barrier around those.
-In my picture the door latch rod will be behind the barrier (outside the vapour barrier)
-After this picture I also added a flap inside the door to cover my leather pull strap so that it doesn't wick water from outside the vapour barrier towards the inside of the car
-For speakers cut a speaker sized hole in the vapour barrier to let the sound into the car.
-Speakers protrude outside the barrier so can also have a flap made to protect them. Some auto sound companies have plastic enclosures to protect them

My car doesn't have speakers so I jest covered over the hole in the door with the barrier.

I taped mine in that I made from a piece of plastic painters tarp. I figure it won't be the last time I get into the door pockets so I might as well make it easier on myself when I do take the panels off again. BTW, my car had the speaker baffles installed.

Before you make a much larger mess than necessary, I'll say it again. Butyl Rope. All you need is a thin bead, no more than an 1/8". Some non-Porsche pics for clarity. -J

Thanks Gents. That makes it clearer, I didn't know about the speaker enclosures and that was causing me to scratch my head. I love this web site.

You should also glue a flap inside the lower hole to keep water from slipping between the liner and filtering to the bottom of your inside panel.
