Mocal cooler advice

Hi guys,

I would like to ask some advice regarding the Mocal radiator style coolers. I need to replace the trombone cooler in my 1977 911. I have looked at the factory Carrera option and they are roughly $300 US more expensive than what the Mocal setup seems to be.

B.A.T Inc sell $389 19 row cooler kit, is this all that is needed, and a stone guard for it to be modified to fit. I noticed the other kit they sell has the fittings at the top (Kit A) as opposed to kit B which has them on the side. Is kit B harder to fit?

I did some research on past posts and it seems pretty straight foward, but because I am getting it shipped from the US I don't want to miss anything.

Is it a good, economical alternative to the factory Carrera setup?

Thanks for any info.

I put one of the mocal coolers in my race car, I bought the mounting kit but not the oil line kit ( I was doing all the hoses in braided Stainless Steel AN-16) and I had quite a bit of trouble getting it to fit. I ended up welding up my own mounts and getting it in that way. I may have missed the easy solution, but I would make sure you get a few posts on how to do this before you buy this solution.

I did not give you an answer but I will bump your post so hopefully some one will.

Thanks Jim,

From some previous posts it looks relatively straight forward but if one version saves me pain over another version then I would rather go for it. Do they cool as well as the standard factory ones?

Dana - I installed a mocal unit (the larger one) by mounting it to the stone shield. I also reinforced the shield. One note that you will find by reading other oil cooler threads is the modal unit uses smaller hoses and has smaller fittings - therefore restricting oil flow compared to the trombone and carrera units. Mine went on a 1969 so the mocal was the same size lines as the early S coolers and hard lines. So no reduced flow in my case. Took some work with the welder but worked out nicely. Check the PP threads under oil cooler for many pics on how to install.

I had aquired the 28-tube copper cooler (used) with brackets/mounts/hoses from Pelican that I had at first planned on installing. I intend to sell them - Just havn't gotten around to listing them under parts for sale. E-mail me if you are interested - I can take some pictures this weekend.

Thanks for the info Joe. By the looks of it, after working out the pricing, its probably better for me to actually get the Carrera cooler locally. Though I am sure it will be a huge improvement on cooling.
