Cross Shaft Won't Budge...Help Please!

I'm in the process of a top-end rebuild on my 1987 Targa...taking it slow, but I'm committed to the process. The engine and trans I've lowered out with care and without incident. Now trying to get the engine onto the stand for disassembly.

Now I need to separate my G50 from the engine and I'm having a bit@h of a time pulling the (updated) cross shaft. The damn thing just won't budge. I've hit it twice with Aero Kroil, and have been taking the slide hammer to it, pretty aggressively too and it will not even give me the satisfaction of moving a couple of centimeters.

I'm not looking for encouragement necessarily, though if everyone comments that I just need to be persistent that will give me some solace. I'm wondering if there are any tricks to releasing that damn thing...I've search the forum several times and have read everything out there as far as 1987 and beyond G50 trans removal threads and there isn't anything there that provides any additional incite.

Please help a brotha out!!

about all you can do is be patient. aggressive slide hammer work can cause the aluminum shaft support ears to break off, so dial back the force and keep soaking with kroil.

I performed this job recently separating my G50 gearbox from the engine. Tried all the suggested techniques to no avail (penetrating oil, slide hammer, etc).

I rigged up a length of screwed rod and a 'strongback' to apply tension to the shaft. This didn't work. However application of heat to the bearing areas with tension still applied did work. I borrowed oxy/acetylene, but I think propane or Mapp gas would have worked. Whilst applying gentle heat I could hear a few 'pinging' noises as the rod released - slowly at first for the first few thou, applied more tension, more heat, and out it came. I think it was jammed in the bearing closest to the point of pull.

Stongback and rod bottom left of 1st picture.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking of heat, I do have a MAPP torch, but wasn't sure where to apply.

Did you apply heat directly to the area where the shaft is accessed?

Thanks again for the reply.

Hi Steve,

Apply heat to the lugs inside the bellhousing. Access the far side via the starter motor hole.

Just noticed your signature. Remember, nothing is f**ked. The aeroplane has not crashed into the mountain.

Thanks loads...MAPP torch did the trick, though it did take a lot longer than I thought it would.

Thanks again.
