Intermittent start problem
 
Well guys, I have this recurring problem that I thought was going to go away after installing the MSD ignition. It started right up as it would sometimes with the Original box but then I shut it off and it wouldn't start again. I have a new fuel pump and it is working so the head scratching continues. Anyone have a similar problem?:confused: Car is a 1978 ROW 911 SC

Spark, fuel or air.

Check for spark at the plug. If you got it move to fuel.

Spritz some ether/kiwik start into the intake. If it tries to start it's fuel.

CIS is ALL about fuel pressure. Pump, filter and other fun CIS components. I don't miss it since my 3.6 conversion.

Norm,

Two (2) recent MSD conversion projects had initial problem/s and finally corrected by Warren (Wolds) and Tim (Tirwin). Read their posts or PM them for assistance. Their screen names are in parenthesis. Keep us posted.

Check the condition of the distributor wire at the connector, which is about 10 to 12 inches back from where it meets the distributor. If the junction is compramised or if a wire is broken, it could be intermittent. Probably not your problem, but it takes just a few minutes to confirm and it's free and easy.

Fuel accumulator? I had the same issue with my SC if I was running errands lots of stops and starts especailly on hot days. New accumulator and no issues after that.

Hot starts, check valve in the neck of the fuel pump......cheap fix.

I think I may have fried the msd because I touched the white wire to the coil while it was running and it killed it. after that it wont start. I tried plugging in the old perma tune and it started but I cant continue to use the old box because it was giving me the intermittent problem to begin with. Just for the record, everything in the fuel system is brand new or reworked since I have been restoring the car. When it runs, it runs great but when it dies it stays dead. I cant figure it out yet.

Buy a rebuilt Bosch unit. Contact ischmitz he is a PP vendor.
