Well actually its like asking whats the difference between the "901/25" and the "901" Engine type.
The G50 is the type of transmission, but it had model numbers, such as the G50/03 and the G50/20 etc. The G50/50 was the new 5 speed version introduced for the 1989 Turbo model IIRC. |

Shortened bellhousing and input shaft?
That's my best guess since I don't believe the factory changed the torsion bar tubes and such to accomodate the different trans. (G50/50) for the 89 930 Turbo. I'd have to guess that the gearsets are different as well. Ratios and strength are most likely changed to deal with the increased ooomph of the 3.3L turbo.

I doubt it was shortened. They probably just used the post '86 torsion bar tube which already had room for the the "normal" G50.

I don't believe there was ever a factory shortened bellhousing gearbox. The short bellhousing units you see are shop conversions done to install the G50 in pre-1987 cars without the need for cutting the T-tubes. The G50 was used on the normally aspirated cars, starting in 1987. The G50-50 was used on the Turbos, starting in 1989. Both are 5-speed with hydraulic clutch. The G50-50 also has higher ratios.
