Rear Fog Light Question please?
Hi guys,
Okay, so years ago I tried to fit one of these fogs to my '85 Carrera, bought the proper two position 'pull and turn' dash switch and everything. I was stopped dead in my tracks when I couldn't find the mythical ROW wires taped up in the left rear quarter panel....I didn't want to run a bunch new wiring through the engine compartment. Fast forward 8 years and I've swapped the Iris Blue '85 for a Silver '84 M491 coupe. Purely by accident I happened across two wires taped way up in the left rear fender while performing routine maintenance. They are old and faded, some shade of brown. So I've two questions: 1. Could they be anything except leads for a rear fog lamp? 2. Does the wiring in the rear guarantee that there will be extra leads behind the the dash to hook up to the two position fog light switch? Scott, the extra wires by the left rear light cluster are the fog light wires. Check for current to them. Headlights on, then pull/pull-turn the fog light switch. There shoud be current in one of the wires. That's how it was in my '84 cab.

Thanks George,
I should have given a clearer picture to you. I currently have a standard 2 position U.S. Fog Lamp switch in my dash that was installed at the factory. What I'm wondering, is there a couple of wires behind the dash taped off or tied up that would be the "other" end of the ROW Fog Lamp wiring loom??? In other words, I've bought the proper European 2 position switch, will it be plug and play when I get behind the dash on my U.S. spec car with wires in the left rear fender? Thanks! Scott

The other end of the wires should be behind the dash. The trick will be finding them, but the wires have to go somewhere.
I recognize that fog light!

In my car, admittedly a Euro model, the wires were connected to the switch.
No matter what, the first step should be to check for current at the wires wit hthe switch *in all possible positions*. If the wires are not connected to the switch, then your best bet is to remove the airbox in the back of the trunk and look behind for the missing wires, after having checked their color on the wiring diagram. |

Yep, Steve that's your fog lamp. Got her all wired up and ready to go on a freshly painted Euro bumper that I found in a loft at my local body shop. They did slant nose conversions in the 80's, he sold it to me basically for scrap price.
Appreciate the tip George. The windshield is coming out as well for a used dash replacement so I should be able to see back there pretty well, between the fan and dash removal. I figure it's my best shot at doing this right. Thanks guys, Scott

Scott, with no dash, it gets so easy it is a pleasure. I had the dash off for a while, it was the best time to clean up wiring there. No need to remove the fan box in that case.

That's good to know George!
I've not had a dash off before....I'm braced for the adventure. Everyone loathes the process. My painter has a windshield service guy with oodles of experience removing and replacing the front glass as well as the rear and quarter windows on 911's ....$80 each R & R. And he'll come back after a few days to finish the install, no extra charge. Can't beat that. I plan to change out the seals on all of the windows and check for hidden rust.....boy all to replace the dash.....very slippery indeed. Scott
