A tool with prongs that fit into those holes is used to pull the cap off of the wheel.

Up until the holes were invented the caps came off when the wheels were off the car. Usually with a large wooden dowel or the ass end of a hammer with a sharp bang with a metric crescent wrench.

But, I am so loving this new (1987) car... today, I just set up my lawn chair in the garage, plugged in a box fan and just sat there with the car being grateful... My wife thinks that's pretty cool, but I'm afraid that I just may be nutz! Thanks for the info! Rob
