3.6 tt engine in 964 C4
I'm planing to install 3.6 tt engine in my c4 90, how complicated is it, where can I get info about it?
Thanks Tal |
Sounds great Tal , but its not your everyday swap for us poor folk. Ill will be happy with a non turbo 3.6 when I can get the money together. This dam house is kiiling me with all the renovations I have been paying for. So its 2.7 for a while anyway.

If you've already got a 3.6 in your C4 (which I assume you do), rather than swapping the whole engine you'd probably get more bang-for-buck by getting an aftermarket turbo kit. I'd have a look at companies like Protomotive (www.protomotive.com) - I haven't done this, but I am considering it as soon as I can get the money.

Tal, Eion is right, you'd be way ahead if you just retain your existing 3.6L (assuming it is in good condition with relatively low mileage) and perform an aftermarket turbo conversion on it, such as a Protomotive Stage 1 or Stage 2 turbo conversion.
Have a look at this http://www.netquest.net/~knighton/964descr.htm I have a Protomotive base turbosystem on my 3.2 Carrera and I haven't looked back :D For the 964, they obtain that C/R of 8.25:1 by machining down the crown of your factory pistons and even once done, it is thicker/meatier than the factory TT pistons ;) On only 0.5bar non-intercooled, you'd be putting out the same HP as a factory 993TT and WITH proper intercooling @ 1bar, you'd be well in the mid 500's HP mark  Just another alternative to purchasing a complete 993tt engine and having a shop do a compete engine transplant. Whilst you have your engine apart, you can freshen up your internals and know what condition your engine is in. |

My bad! I don't think mileage is a real issue to be honest. As long as your motor is strong and has a good compression and leakdown result, it would be fine. My Carrera had 120,000k's (~65k miles) on it when I had the conversion performed. Still runs VERY strong (16k Km's later) and I beat the ***** out of it every chance I get (which is every day) ;)
Having said that, Protomotive typically refresh the top-end of ANY engine they do that has past the 60k mile barrier and with a 964, they have to do a top end anyway as the factory C/R is way too high for a turbocharged application. The beauty of the 964 engine is the twin plugged configuration and obviously the extra capacity and torque. It'd make a very good, solid platform for such a conversion IMO. |
Excellent! Now I just need to save up a bundle of money, and to work out how I can get this past the California smog... people :p

I recall Todd saying that his systems do pass CA smog tests. Afterall, he IS in Winchester CA, so he designs these systems and associated software to pass emmission requirements :)
It's best if you ask Todd directy, knighton@netquest.net |
Excellent, I'll send him a mail tomorrow :D
Now I've just got to get the cash  |
tal911, simple question, why?
If you want a tt, sell your car and buy one, it would be cheaper. A 90 C4 may not be the most desirable Porsche on the planet and having a tt motor in it wouldn't help. Good way to turn a large amount of money into a small amount. Another alternative would be a supercharger. One of the local de fellows has an early C4. Had the motor rebuilt to 3.8, blew it up, put a 3.6 back, and then had Turbo Performance Center (TPC) in Jessup, MD 410 799 7223 install their supercharger kit. Looks like a factory installation. |
My 90 C2 is undergoing the stage 1 turbo at Protomotive now. I should be picking up the car in the next few weeks, so I can start a thread with all the details then. Also, along with the stage 1 I'm getting the intercooler.
eion, if you're interested in checking out the car, I live near Yuba City, Ca. We could meet half-way. Merv, I look at pics of your car from time to time to help ease the pain of being away from my car for so long. Gary |
