81 targa speedometer question
I met a fellow pelican and we got talking about his 85 mile speedometer he also has a 81 targa like me
My question is I have a 150 mile speedo does this mean someone has replaced mine ? Did the 81 911 come with 85 mile speedos ? |
Ok I found a few posts regarding this issue seems like no one really knows what exact year the 85 mile was swapped out

It seems, at least according to this, that october 21 1981 was the date at which it was no longer a requirement (or at least they proposed that it was no longer necessary) for the 85MPH speedos.
National Maximum Speed Law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Although if I was a betting man, my guess is that Porsche used up what ever 85MPH units they had and when they had to order more went back to the 160 style gauge. So it was most likely a random day that they changed over. Regards Dave |
yep.^
What you can do is pull the 150 speedo and check for the date code. (each is date stamped - blue ink iirc) More than likely, it is a few years off from the production date. |

One of the few maintenance entries I have in the glove box maintenance log is for a speedo replacement on my 81. I have the 150 speedo so this probably was the reason.
Original owner could only take 9 months of the pain. I don't have the car with me now or I could pull the speedo to check date stamp. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1401224066.jpg |
