Can anyone offer advise or have experience with importing from Ontario to the US? I am considering an ebay car offered in Ontario.
Are there gray market issues such as DOT or EPA requirements ? Would documentation be required to clear customs ? I guess there would be an import duty. I also think it would be important that the VIN on the car is where it is supposed to be - I think the dash, inside door post and under trunk carpet ? THanks for any info. |

I did just the opposite a couple of years ago when I imported a US car to Canada. Actually nothing to it as long as you jump through the hoops.
I found this link that may help. http://www.buyclassiccars.com/import.asp I'm pretty sure the emission standards for later cars are the same, but don't take my word for it. Good luck...Tim |

I bought a car in Montreal last year and brought
it back to the States. Was the car originally a US or Cdn. import? If so there shouldn't be a problem. You need to contact PCNA give them the VIN and they will send you documentation that the car complied w/ US DOT and EPA requirements. Customs will want to see this. I seem to remember that if the car is more than 20 yrs. old it doesn't have to meet EPA standards any more, for customs anyway. There is a sliding scale duty to pay, around 2 - 3 %. I did A LOT of research before I did it and if you have all of the documentation it is pretty painless. Email me off line if you have any questions. I can get out my file and tell you exactly what you need.

Hi
You have a whole lot of import rules to follow. If the car was originally a US specification model, it will have the federal sticker in the left door jam under the striker latch. That sticker will state the applicable usa info along with the vehicle i.d. #. SO you can't just go to a US Porsche dealer and buy a generic sticker. These stickers came on all Porsche models from 1970 and newer (maybe even 1969, but can't remember for sure) If it was an earlier car, you actually have a better chance of importing it. Just because they are our Canadian neighbors and speak the same language doesn't mean the cars can go back and forth across the border Here are some of the fun things you may encounter 1) DOT requirements 2) EPA requirements 3) Posting a bond with US Customs, that will be released once you can show epa and dot compliance 4) State requirements We have all heard stories and seen Canadian Minis and others cruising around, but a lot of those did it illegally. |
