In a pinch: Use standard coil with MSD?
My 73.5 with a 3.2 quit about 10 miles from home last night. Towed it home myself. The "Blaster" coil had been arcing where the coil wire goes in. Had fried the top of the coil and end of the wire.
In a search, not an uncommon problem. I'll order the MSD"high vibration" coil and a better quality coil wire. Just wondering if that had me stranded a long ways out, could I get a common 12 volt from a FLAP and make it home? Should I make an effort to mount the new MSD coil vertically? Thanks |
Should work to get you home. Better yet, the MSD coils are fairly inexpensive, get 2 and have a spare in the frunk it you are really concerned about a failure.
My Blaster II HV coil has been mounted in the stock position for 3 years now. (Upside down) |
If the arc is penetrating, or jumping "over" the coil tower then you have something wrong downstream.
That should NEVER be the lowest "resistance" path for the MSD arc. |

Electricity is based on voltage and current.
So...as the voltage rises ... the gap that it able to jump gets bigger too. Current has something to do with it...but voltage is the main concern. If the coil wire was loose in the coil tower....the gap between the end of the wire and the bottom of the coil would be quite small. But...if the resistance of the wire were large enough...it could present a different problem....think of it as raising the gap...and therefore allowing the spark to jump to something other than the wire. If you look at a standard coil...the high tension tower is separated by an insolator from the outside world....this makes it more difficult for the spark to jump out. If the tower is cracked (and they do over time) then the dirt and other junk inside the crack becomes conductive....allowing the spark to escape (bad spark...LOL) Keeping the tower and surrounding area clean and the terminals clean and tight is the first defence in the system. I like the MSD coils...they are cheaper than Bosche..and seem to last a long time. If the concours people kick up a fuss...disguise the coil...make it look like a Bosche (cheat?). Bob |
