compatability of suspension parts/pan/gas tank
Trying to determine whether the parts that I have are compatible as my car is being painted and all apart. The car is a 72T that had previously been converted to a short hood turbo body with a 911SC front suspension that included SC A-arms, SC front sway bar, aluminum cross member, and SC belly pan. The gas tank was a stock 72.
I now am converting the car back to a long hood 73 rs clone and would like to use a through-the-body 22mm aftermarket sway bar by grinding the sway bar mounts from the SC A-arms and welding the proper U-tabs. I'll also be using a plastic gas tank that came from a 73E. My questions are: 1) Whether the belly pan from the 911SC will work with the 73RS plastic gas tank and a 22mm through the body sway bar. If not, do I need to find an early belly pan from a 73 (or a modified pan to give protection to the plastic tank)? 2) Will there be any problems fitting the parts if I use the aluminum cross member? If so, do I need to go with a steel cross member or a forged aluminum one? Any input you have on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Last edited by MST0118; 02-09-2015 at 05:57 PM.. Reason: gram |

Any thoughts on whether these parts will work together?

I think the belly pan for the plastic tank is a bit longer.
The aluminum crossmember was used on some of the last 73's and is a common upgrade. Don't know about the sway bar clearance.

You need a pan (and I have one; PM if you need it). I don't see why you don't think the sway will work. The plastic RS tank shouldn't interfere. You're using the normal 85L model, right? The aluminum crossmember is similarly interference-free.

My understanding (obviously not first hand) is the plastic tank sits lower in the chassis and thus decreases road clearance and thus exposing it to potential damage. Unknown whether the SC undercover will fit with this tank, but the SC cover only extends up to a factory tank (see photo).
A friend with a '73 removed the plastic tank due to it hanging too low (bent a supplied cover attachment which then kinked a fuel line). The front ride height is a variable. The aluminum crossmember is a direct replacement for the steel version. Haven't heard of any differences. Search the internet for pics to compare and confirm. Here's an SC tank in my '69 with SC front suspension with its al. crossmember. ![]() Before folks get upset about my floor jack placement, I have installed a long ~8mm spacer to span the normal space between the cover and the crossmember. This results in a handy front/central lifting point w/o bending anything. Sherwood |

Thanks guys for all the advice. Looks like I'll need another pan. Red Dog I'll be sending you a pm on the pan.
